Jay-Z Earned $63M Last Year and Gave Only $6,000 to Charity: Sad or Not?

In the video below, Dr. Boyce Watkins and Yvette Carnell discuss the fact that Jay-Z earned $63 million dollars last year and gave only $6000 to charity.  Is it his business or should the community expect him to give from those he’s taken from?  The video is below and will begin after a brief advertisement.

Oh, and most charities are nothing more than a scam that rich people use to avoid paying taxes and to employ their friends and family. A lot of times the money that is donated is not being used for the purposes that the charity claims. Jay-Z more than likely knows this. When I get my paper up I’m not donating to charities wither because I’ll have my own set up.

Jay-Z has his own foundation, the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund. Why would he be giving all of his money away to other people when he has his own charity that needs the money? Furthermore, black people need to stop looking to the few of who have had success to reach back and help us out. There are too many of us that can do things in our own way to help for us to be waiting around for some one else to step up to the plate. If we work together as a collective we could solve a lot of our own problems instead of looking for some savior to wash away all of our problems with their checkbook.

No its not sad Its his right to give or not..Now we also must ask what charities he gave and chose not to give to? Regardless either way that money is his and we have nada de decir Nothing to say! Jay Z does not have to give 6 pennies to anyone..Why is anyone shocked?

    Gracias

Very interesting comments. If Jay-Z really want to know what people think about him, he needs to read the comments and by all means take them to heart, and let it be his food for his soul. His is doing just what the white man has done for years and he feel that it’s his turn. My mom use to say “that she never saw an armored car ever following a funeral to the cemetery”. Who promised him that he would be here to enjoy his 63M? Look at Whitney, here today and gone today, it’s never tomorrow. She will be deeply miss, so Jay-Z stop being a taker and try giving sometimes, it doesn’t have to be a lot, but it needs to be more than that $6,000 you gave to your own charity, WOW!

What difference does it make if you boycott? You have a choice to buy or not. That’s his lively hood. He used what he got to get what he want. Quit hatting and make up your own minds and do youM btw, I’ve never bought a cd or clothes of his, but it is my choice. What he does with his money that he makes is HIS business, and I respect him for that part. So may black bruz and sistaz, get over it and do you.

It is very disheartnening. If it were not for the people buying their records, they would not be as finanically secure as they are now. As a group of Black people,we should boycott all future records. Let them live on what they got. Since they do not feel compel to donate to charities, we should not feel compel to buy.their music. As a New Yorker, I feel ashamed of him and he can surely bet that I wull make sure that my children and grandchildren will not help to promnote his selfishness.

I mean really people……he had Oprah sitting in the projects. I doubt if she could maintain such a relationship with him without knowing that he is handing over the paper!

Starting to think Dr. Boyce is a bit of a hater, I say this not because I agree with Jay z’s behavior but it is in fact his money, he didn’t steal it or force anyone to buy his music. He is free to spend it the way he wants to. I don’t buy his music and I don’t have a say on how he spends his money. Be an example and give the brother a call and find where his mind set is. If I were to criticize anything it may be the lyrics themselves and try to cultivate and create constructive discourse.

We must cease supporting those who fail to support Our Community:
STOP piercing your male children’s ears to resemble ballers/gangsters/etc.
STOP Tatooing your Beautiful Black Skin.
STOP buy other people’s Hair or Synthetic Hair; take the time to Cultivate the Mane you have been blessed with. The Korean Community is THRIVING…thanks to your purchases.
STOP allowing your children to SAG their pants! VICTIMS wear oversized garments…not FREE, Intelligent, Dignified people.
STOP allowing your daughters to Aspire to be Kim K.! There is no dignity in admiring a female who uses her body to acquire wealth…unless she’s a skilled dancer, gymnist or the like.
When Black Millionaires begin to donate to Black Community-Based 501(c)(3)’s, they will help to create JOBS! We need to hire Staff and Pay LIVEABLE SALARIES. Even during a Recession, we can build Our Community. We just have to CARE! Finally, any of us with a job should make it our business to Donate to Black Community-Based Organizations. You don’t have to be a Millionaire to give because Every $ makes a difference.

This idea of giving is so personal & the motivation has to come from inside each of us.
This is why I disagree with those preachers that try & lay a guilt trip on us about our giving until it hurts c**p. Each one of us knows what we should & can give and should accordingly without outside prompting. God looks on the heart.
I think I now really understand what Romney meant about the poor having a safety net. He meant it in terms of his own religious experience where no Mormon is allowed to starve as the Mormons provide their own welfare system for their own out of a feeling of belonging & being responsible for their bretheren. Obviously a concept that can be expanded into our total society.

While many people are putting down Jay Z for only giving $6,000 to charity, the question is why are we holding him for ridicule when so many other black wealthy celebrities also fail to give back. What has Michael Jordan done for the black community considering all the money he has made from poor black kids who kill each other to own a pair of Jordans? SO please spare me. If youre going to go after Jay Z, please add Michael Jordan to the list.

Mr. Jay-Z McScrooge (your words) says it all. If you believe that the knowledgeable people around this man (like the kind big corporates have) has not given more than 6,000 to charity, I have a bridge you might be interested in buying. This is what I have dubbed “exclusion journalism”….you know that kind of yellow journalism that ignores, oh say, the Katrina donation. Im struggling Dr. Boyce to find your redeeming factors but you are making it so hard. I know you have good in you; please use it more!

But really the bottom line here does anyone really believe that this man or his wife give a d**n about the poor or disenfranchised. I don’t give a s**t about how much money he’s made he’s still nothing but a thug. Money cannot buy dignity or class and he has none.

If he was a drug dealer and selling to our kids, we would be talking about what a bad person he is and how we need to take him off the streets. He is doing well. Be proud of his accomplishments. We as a people needs to change our mind set about our community. Does anyone ask our mothers, sisters and aunts why when all the money is given to those Mega Churches, don’t the “Preacher Man” give some back to the community?

Leta, you couldn’t be more wrong. The reason why whites, Jews and Asians will always stay ahead is because they truly INVEST back into their community to foster the circle that the lady is talking about in the video. I myself got my first degree from the scholarships of Jewish and whites money and I’m back in school now working on another degree with the help of philanthropic Doctors and businessmen/women that don’t even require a certain GPA. They believe in flowering their community and if you look around at our community, all the folks that have made it have not cared about the tree. So keep that attitude and no one will be able to treat your illness or clean your teeth but someone else from the other race. i don’t buy his music but I wonder who was the doctors and nurses birthing and taking care of his child in the hospital? Oh, I’m a black nurse so I just wonder was a black nurse ” in the room?”

This is getting totally ridiculous. Black is getting even worse than the white media. Number one, just how do Dr. Boyce Watkins and Yvette Carnell know its a fact how much he donated? Who says he has to give anything. The Carters gave a six figure donation to the hospital their child was born in, above the bill they had. What was that then? I’m sick of black and white media thinking these celebrities have to donate or give anything to any charities. Then have you ever thought about this. Maybe his donations are done anonymously. Hmmmmm how about that. Get out of people business and mine ya own. While you worrying about what these celebrities are doing, oooops, some skeletons fell out your closet. Better clean that up.

The white media did not create Jay Z. He is no longer a drug dealer and has accomplished quite a bit to have come out of the hood! How do you truly know what he has given? He really doesn’t owe any of us anything! We buy his music because we choose to not because he is making us. Who are we to say how much some one should give? The good book says owe no man nothing but to love him! The black media is just as hypocritical as the white media. The fact that he has accomplished all that he has coming out of the hood is a testimony in itself. If his clothes are too high there is a walmart just a few steps away. You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t!

An unfair characterization. He doesn’t deduct his charitable contributions from his taxes… I find that honorable. As opposed to those who give for the purpose of saying, look at me, look at my taxes. Look at what or how much I give. Black folk are known to be the most charitable, it’s proven in studies all the time. However they don’t record it on their Income Taxes. We know “He has a whole charitable foundation that gives a lot of money locally and abroad…and when he went to Africa he built pipelines and watersheds so that villages can have water for villages in Africa”..The writer of the article could’ve just asked him! HE DOESN’T TAKE THE CHARITABLE DEDUCTIONS!

Just like your asking how does the author know, how do you know? Did you have a conversation with him? NO, so the statement/question you are posing to others, ask yourself. He has a foundation and that foundation has to show were their funds are going, so do some research and get your own answer in part.

I don’t see why it is any of our business what JayZ gives or does not give.

Do we scream and cry about what white performers do or don’t do?

If we work hard, does that mean we have to answer to everyone?

WE should becareful about throwing stones at others.

By the way, I haven’t decided that greed is good. I have decided if I work hard for my money, what I do with it is my business.

Our world exists with both the takers and the givers. WE must decide what we’re going to be…a taker or a giver.

It never really wanted to know what this hustler with no talent makes. He was created by the white media as a talented person. I don’t agree. He represents pure greed, not need. He doesn’t get it and will not get it. If he can read, he needs to read “The Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison. We should not buy anything that he is connected. He is nothing but a greedy man out of touch.

Apparently he is business savvy and that is a talent, hip hop artist that is a talent. Was Steve Jobs greedy? Bill Gates greedy?is Louis Vouton greedy? And the beat goes on……….

Jay-Z failing to commit $ back to the same community he helped Destroy through drugs & violence is no surprise. And his mother was a gov’t. employee so he can’t even claim he sold drugs out of desperation.
Unfortunately, most of the Black Foundations established by our Atheletes and other Entertainers fail to donate $ to Black Community-based 501(c)(3)’s. They use these Foundations as Tax Shelters and an Employment Resource for Family and friends. But, when the IRS decides to dig deep into their records, it will hit the proverbial fan!
I agree with Yvette Carnell, we must:
STOP Supporting, Buying and Celebrating these “TAKERS” who fail to help build Our Community.
STOP letting your children “SAG” their pants…like grown a*s Jay-Z & others.
STOP piercing your boy’s ears to look like ballers/pimps/gangsters.
STOP TATOOing your beautiful Black Skin.
Finally, when these Black Millionaires support community-based organizations, they help to create jobs. We need Staff and want to PAY these individuals a LIVEABLE SALARY. Hence, we not only offer necessary services but, we help to build Our Economy!

Let me ask you that same question because looks can be deceiving? God looks at the heart and man looks at the outer appearance. At one time I judged Jay Z because of the lyrics I was hearing that I did not like. After catching a sit down interview he did allowed me to see and understand a side to him that the music did not reveal and I repented for judging a man I did not know. We all are evolving in this game called life and only God knows where each of us stands when it comes to God!
