Firefighters were called to battle a four-alarm fire at the Tyler Perry studios in Atlanta on Tuesday night. Nearly 100 firefighters came to the scene, according to officials.
There is no word on what caused the fire, and no reported injuries. The studios are over 200,000 square feet in size, containing five sound stages, a post production facility, a back lot, a 400-seat theater and much more. President Barack Obama paid a visit to the studios earlier this year.
There are a collapse in one of the buildings, and it is not known if this is going to affect production. The Ruby Dee-Ossie Davis studio, the Cicely Tyson studio and the Sidney Poitier studio are all believed to have been affected.
Perry appeared on the scene to assess the damage. He has yet to make a statement.

When are African Americans going to wake up and see that we have to do for our selves and forge ahead and stop the despicable back biting because one of our own had to the audacity to go out and risk his neck building a magnificent business that benefits the entire community. The Movie industry is a business where Blacks are largely excluded. Tyler uses the money he makes to promote his people and provide opportunities.
Did you ever stop to think that his business is being sabotaged by those who like many incidents in the past when Black businesses were burnt or bombed as in the case of Black Wall street in Oklahoma to prevent African Americans from rising? Are you really naïve to think those days are over? Because if you do why are so many African Americans being targeted in a whole slew of areas. Driving While Black, Jail terms, work shortage. Along comes Tyler who has the courage to live a life that is deserving of any African American and all you can say is I am glad his business burnt because you didn’t like his films. You are providing a reason those people who may or may not be responsible for the destruction of his business. Maybe he was approached to sell his empire and he said no, therefore they burnt it to teach him a lesson. This man is built an incredible empire which gives him power the likes that rarely few Blacks have known.
Stop and think because if all you have to do is gloat, God help you when more is taken away from you. You can call on Jesus all you like then “cause he AINT going to appear because God has being sending you examples but you keep spitting on them. How many of you supported Oprah’s film BELOVED that was uplifting or AMISTAD? I bet you all went to see Titanic instead. You are hypocrites. Wake up before it’s too late because the house is being sold right from under you.

I couldn’t have said it any better! Why do “we” have to criticize each other? We are the only culture on the planet that does that! And those that do, don’t have a pot to p**s in or a door to throw it out!!!

I agree with you 100% Jonny E.
Many African American today are closeted ‘Uncle Toms.”
They love to criticise others while not making any kind of contribution themselves to the upliftment of our people.

Mr. Perry, I pray that God will continue to bless you and your staff. I pray that God will place a shield of love and protection around you, hold you and your family in the hollow of his precious hands, and grant you peace that surpasses all understanding.
Your movies are an inspiration to many. Your character as Madea sends a mighty message to us as parents that we must “STAND” up for “OUR” family and “OUR” communities.
You are a jewel, please allow God to continue to use your anointed talents to spread love to many. Thank God no one was hurt and prayers have been prayed for God to restore abundance to you.

LOVE TYLER PERRY–HIS MOVIES,PLAYS, EVERYTHING AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE HATE ON HIM THE WAY THAT THEY DO. HE IS AN INCREDIBLY GIFTED BROTHER.
IF THERE IS FOUL PLAY INVOLVED MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THOSE WHO COMMITTED THIS TERRIBLE,TERRIBLE ACT. THIS IS NOTHING BUT PURE HATE AND EVILNESS IN IT’S PUREST FORM. STAY STRONG TP. STAY STRONG!!!

Lord have mercy…All things work for the good of those that love the Lord and are called. This affects the community you helped to develop. We are praying and you stay strong. You teach with every play and you make things reasonable for us to purchase. You donot fleece God’s people! It could have been so much worse! We are thankful no one got hurt. Material things can be replaced! Tyler and staff can not. Amen.We love you!

I hope nobody’s hurt, Tyler, you are a strong black man in this world of many colors, my prayers are with you, You will bounce back through Christ who strengthens you, so, if there was foul play, GOD has already caught it, and Venegeance will be his. Keep on making those movies and of course that MONEY, the devil wants you to give in and throw in the towel But the GOD we serve have another plan bigger and better, WE SHALL remember that the same God that helped you do what you do, HAVE some more material already waiting to start building again reserved in your NAME. I glad to hear that noone was in the building and got hurt, that was a blessing there. He’s a good business man so hes probably insured and will be able to rebuild it will just take a lot of valuable tme. And James you may not like his movies or plays but there are millions of people who still do, he is still selling out concert arenas to see the Madea character. So as long as people love the character enought to pay big money to see Madea, hes not going to stop the character. James if you were doing something that grossed over a million dollars would you stop using it.

Y Y Y is there so much hate for Madea? She is a character no different than any other. She offers humor and important lessons to her audience. He has explained the origins of Madea and what she means to him. Madea apparently speaks to thousands across the country because theaters are sold out!!
Tyler Perry is doing his part what are the people crticizing him doing for the community? Life should be balanced humor, drama, fact and fiction…so where is your contribution. Because of who I am I would watch it too.

It’s amazing that people find it necessary to preface their posts with “I’m not a fan of Tyler Perry” or “I don’t like Tyler Perry’s Movies” but since some have, I’d like to balance the discussion and say that I greatly admire what he’s been able to accomplish with his business.
I’ve been an entertainment attorney for the past 17 years and during that time, I’ve come to understand how very closed certain areas of the business are to African Americans. Despite this, Tyler Perry (whom I’ve never met)has managed to obtain an unprecedented level of independence in one of the most closed arenas in entertainment, filmaking. He’s done this not only because of his great talent, but because of his patience in dealmaking, his unwillingness to sell his soul and his determination to do deals under his own terms. My first hand experience tells me that this is extraordinary amongst African Americans unfortunately.
I saw a portion of the studio during the recent camapaign event hosted there for President Obama. It was unbelievably inspiring to attend the event at such an impressive campus. What makes it more impressive is the facility is built in a long time African American community that in recent years has deteriorated due to neglect and indifference. Despite the barriers faced in Hollywood for African American filmmakers, Mr. Perry has made his enterprise arguably the most profitable studio per dollar invested than any other studio in Hollywood. What’s not to like and admire about these accomplishments?
Tyler Perry’s story is truly remarkable given the specific facts related to the industry that he operates in. From what I read, he’s remained committed to his community throughout. Morehouse College will attest that one of the reasons that the institution was able to secure The Martin Luther King Papers for it’s archives was a gift made by Tyler Perry. When Whitney Houston died, Tyler Perry’s jet transported her body from LA to New Jersey. See this site for other charitable donations that he has made. http://www.microgiving.com/blog/2010/12/tyler-perry-tv-and-movie-mogul-committed-to-donating-to-charity-organizations/
Therefore, I find it tough to invoke negativity when speaking about him. And I’m disappointed that his studio was damaged. That studio benefits us in ways that you may not even realize. I’m not sure how many people (black, white, red, brown) have jobs due to Mr. Perry’s entrepreneurship, but it must be thousands. I was inspired just walking through the back lot seeing the soundstages and artificial bulding that we normally only see in LA at Paramount or Universal Studios. Because Mr. Perry has been successful with his movies, some other African American producer may get a shot to do a film. And maybe, some of you may just like that new producer’s film. So…before we go chopping him off at the knees, let’s raise him up and celebrate his accomplishments. What he is doing is a good thing.

Goodness..All that we KNOW is that there was a fire there last night; NOTHING ELSE. Anything can cause a fire: most common is some electrical shortage. It is very easy for them to determine the cause. Please don t use this time to downgrade Mr. Perry.. And of course he has insurance and surveillance videos, he s no idiot…He is a business man…And for those of you who don t like his work that s your right; however, I say that you don t have the right ear to hear or the right eyes to see the tremendous messages he gets across in every episode.. He s a fine human being….God loves him and so do I…

@Sandra..That’s nicely said. And I agree 110%. I Love all of Tyler’s work. The message of each play and movie contains healing and deliverance. It’s just a matter of embracing the message. And yes this is a time of praying allowing God to have His way. Not only for Mr. Tyler but for everyone throughout this world..And thats’s including myself. Everyone be blessed and look at things from a healthy and non-judging view.
Be Blessed.

@ Juante – true dat his movies may spiritedbring a message, however, it’s how you deliver the message determines how it is received. For me, degrading black women as volatile, loud, abrasive, mean and always mad hinders receiving the message. Like if someone is telling you a story of healing and deliverance but they’re cussing and talking loud and ignorant – would you listen and receive what they’re saying? I think he’s gone in another direction for the sake of ratings, viewers and money.

I too believe it was done because of the racial profiling that Tyler reported. And, it was MAINLY done because of Tyler’s healthy support of President Obama’s election campaign. The devil never played fair. We know that from our history of dealing with his helpers.Well,i’m up earlier seeking God for a way to defend ourselves against them.We have no eartly justice system that will fight fairly in our favor nor do we have any eartly missiles and tanks as they do.Racism and injustice has showed their ugly faces again against our people and will continue to show their ugly faces until theY are defeated. I pray that Tyler do one of his next movies on racism and injustice because it do still exist.

Tyler Perry worked hard to acheive the American dream. He needs all the support from Black people now more then-ever.
Black Wall street was burned to the ground.
Fame and fortune only last for Black folks who stay on the path.

I am not a fan of Tyler Perry movies either. But I am even more against the white establishment in Hollywood trying to sabotage his independence. Much like what happened in the music industry when a collection of artists and producers tried to create a independent distribution company away from the majors.
God forbid black folks wake up and start owning and profiting off of their own art and businesses without a white run corporation with their hands in our pockets, telling us what to do.

I find the fire suspicious and hope no one with access to the Studio was paid to do the damage!
There are many who didn’t like the fact that he publicized his experience of “DWB” with Atlanta law enforcement last month (during or before).
It is my hope that he has digital surveillance footage and it exposes the “demon” responsible for setting this fire.

Knowing the heart of people who commit heinous acts because they want to continue to smash folks, I would not in anyway be surprised if this was done by folks who were mad at the profiling statements. Looks like old school retribution for racists. We had plenty of stuff burned to the ground. Plenty of people beaten and hanged, raped and burned. I am prayerful that the repairs will be don asap and his shiz will be shinier for all to see soon enough. A mess.

This is amazing. A fire happens and already people are talking about racism and even praying about the enemy. You might want to wait until you have the facts. Do you pray for the average brother who loses his house? Or when you see someone’s car repossessed, do you take a moment in prayer for them? Please don’t be like the Pharisees who want to be seen to be religious. It gets old really fast.If you are going to pray for something, how about understanding? Delayed judgment and fairness for all? This could easily have been an electrical fire. At least wait until the investigation is over before we start behaving like the people we’re talking about.

1. I hope no 1 was hurt.
2. I hope he’s insured.
3. I hope there won’t any implications of wrongdoing or fraud.
4. I don’t really care for his movies. Check that. I think the way he depicts our people in many of his movies is a harmful manipulation of our extremely-important image. BUT, I like that he’s gotten work for some Black people.
5. I hope like h**l that they burned the Madea costume. It’s time to put that character out to pasture. Flip Wilson says that act is played out.
