The Definitive List of White Music Stolen by Black People
by Yvette Carnell
Up at the Awl, they’ve posted a nice little list, and it’s not the type of list you’re accustomed to reading on your ordinary run of the mill site.
Not 10 ways to lose weight without dieting. Not 10 ways to catch a man. And no, certainly not 10 songs to listen to while you work out. The list they’ve compiled is The Definitive List of White Music Stolen by Black People.
If by “stole” they mean “made better”, I get it. Having said that, I will also say that I wasn’t aware of how many so-so to pretty good songs by white artists were covered by black artists.
Did you know that The Pointer Sisters covered Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire”? Or that Al Green covered The Doors “Light My Fire”? Or that Stevie Wonder covered The Beatles “We Can Work It Out”? Me neither!
Anyway, it’s a descent list which you can check out here.

This is the list, and the best they could do??!! It’s L-A-M-E!!! BTW, it’s called “Covering” when you sing a song that went nowhere for another artist and turn it into a SMASH HIT!

Are some of the people on here believe that White musicians didn’t steal Black music?

Probably the most influential “white” song was Dylan’s Blowing in the Wind. Inspired Sam Cooke’s A Change is Going to Come & Stevie had a big hit with it. Unusual because Motown usually shyed away from protest songs. Huey Newton & Hendrix were big fans of Dylan. Many black artists covered his songs.
