Venus Williams struggled during her match with Elena Vesnina of Russia and was unable to secure a win, losing to Vesnina in a 6-1, 6-3
first-round loss.
Williams, who has been diagnosed with an auto-immune disease, showed a bit of her old self when she served an ace and returned a whipping backhand. It just wasn’t enough to defeat Vesnina, who returned Williams’ stinging serves.
Vesnina entered the match ranked 79th in the world. Venus is ranked 58th.
Although Williams did not answer questions about her health, she did say, “I did my best today. My opponent played well.”
She added, “Life is challenging. I’m always up for a challenge.”
You’ll recall that Serena Williams suffered a minor breakdown when she was defeated in the first round of the French Open last month.
