Even though a highly sourced article in Fortune magazine revealed yesterday that the ATF never intentionally allowed guns to flow to Mexican drug cartels, House Republicans are determined to paint Holder as the enemy. Rep. Issa has already made the Sunday talk show rounds, insinuating that there is some kind of conspiracy afoot, while simultaneously admitting that he hasn’t seen all of the evidence in the case. Rep.Issa is determined to go ahead with his contempt vote, and the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has staged a walk out in order to bring attention to how unfairly Holder is being treated by the Republican led Congress:
Members of the Congressional Black Caucus are planning to walk out of the House chamber during the vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. The letter was circulated to members of the CBC, encouraging them to participate in the walk-out. The letter was also sent to members of the Hispanic Caucus, the Progressive Caucus, the Asian Pacific American Caucus and others.
“We call upon all members of Congress to stand with us during a press conference on the Capitol Building steps during this appalling series of votes to discuss our nation’s most significant priority–creating jobs,” the letter said. “At this critically important time in our nation, we must work as colleagues rather than political enemies.”
Holder, who is black, also happens to be the first Attorney General to ever be charged with contempt of Congress. Republicans believe that Holder is withholding information related to the Fast and Furious program, a poorly orchestrated sting on gun running that was led by the Department of Justice. Holder has released 7,600 documents thus far, but said that the release of others would breach confidentiality expectations.
