In an inspiring comeback tale, Bryshon Nellum qualified for a berth on the US Men’s Track and Field London Olympic team, four years after being s**t three times in the leg outside of a USC campus party.
On Saturday, Nellum finished third in the men’s 400-meter qualifying race, with a personal best of 44.80 seconds.
In the early hours of Oct. 31, 2008, Nellum was s**t by gang members who mistook him for a rival gang member, and even under those circumstances, his first instinct was to run.
“It’s crazy because I never did fall to the ground. I kept going, just to run to safety,” said Nellum. “I hopped and skipped on one leg to safety. And ever since then I’ve just been recovering.”
The gang members responsible for the shooting were sentenced to 15 years in state prison.
Although it was a challenge to recover from the shooting, hamstring surgeries and a long rehab process, Nellum has grown from the experience.
He reflects, “I just feel like whatever happened, it happened for a reason and now I’m just trying to be a better person and be a better athlete. I think this all just made me stronger overall.”
