Black Female HIV Epidemic Pushes Black Church Ladies to Encourage Testing for Everyone

Tired of waiting for someone else to do it for them, the church women of DC are pushing for additional HIV testing within the African American community.  HIV is killing black people at a rate that is starting to match that of Africa, and the black church has been historically criticized for doing nothing about it.  Well, these women aren’t going to stand idly by and allow this to happen.

Black women are being infected at the highest rate of any other group in America.  Much of this infection is occurring via heterosexual s*x where neither partner is gay.  This debunks one of the great myths that HIV is being spread mostly by gay men.  African Americans, especially those in the church, have an opportunity and obligation to address the issue, and that’s what these women are all about.

HIV rates in Washington DC have been skyrocketing among African American women.  Those who are taking the lead are coming right out of the church and pushing the community to get tested.  They are also speaking boldly about how the black church is not dealing with the HIV crisis directly.

“Unfortunately, the black church just doesn’t want to deal with s*x, but it is very important to talk about it, especially here in D.C., where we have such a high AIDS rate,” Patrice Gayle, one of the organizers for the testing, said. “So many black African American women are contracting the disease, the black church has to be in the forefront of this.”
