Dr. Boyce Watkins, writing for Techyville.com, draws on his roots as a self-proclaimed computer geek and business school professor to talk about the changes he sees in Facebook. According to Dr. Watkins, Facebook is going to soon become a company that most of us don’t recognize, where advertising to the consumer is going to take top priority over everything else. He mentions that technology, mixed with hardcore capitalism, has created a world in which massive amounts of data are collected on all consumers, and this data is used to figure out what they want to buy. This new set of capabilities, conjoined with the power of social media, is going to create a brave new world in advertising.
Says Dr. Watkins:
As a result of Mark Zuckerberg caving in to the pressures of capitalism, there is going to be an urge by Facebook to follow you around the web and use social media to advertise to you like crazy. Both Google and Facebook are notorious for learning your shopping and searching patterns and finding things out about you that even you may not know. But the company is expected to step it up a notch and really start digging into your personal and professional life on a scale that is virtually unprecedented.
