Kathy Henry: College Educated Black Woman Living in a Garbage Can

A blogger writes about her experience “living in a garbage can.”  It’s not an actual garbage can, but her method of describing the subsidized housing in which she lives.   The article is compelling nonetheless, as she has serious issues with HUD:

For the past three years and two months, I have resided in a garbage can. The smells of old garbage, urine, and human funk permeate the air of my surroundings, and stray cats yowl in the middle of the night. The garbage can where I live actually has a name and it is Parkway Gardens Apartments, a federally subsidized low-income housing unit on the South Side of Chicago.

How did a college educated individual like me end up living in a garbage can? After getting laid-off in August of 2007 from my job as an administrative assistant, it seemed like the Furies of Greek mythology were after me. Other than temp work, I could not find a job, full or part-time, and I could not afford the rent at my previous residence. I decided to look on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) website for subsidized housing.

Lady do you have Jesus in your life….You must not because if you are a child of God you wouldn’t be living in a garbage can….You need to be liberated from that slave mentality….But God will only help you only when you show some initiates ….You have been knock to the ground now get up and tell the devil no more no more no more…..and kick this guy to the curb….God animals do not have a job but they know how to survive….And humans suppose to be superior in the mind than animals……….You have great potentials(college educated) now just turn that into kinetic….

as a college educated you can always be a manager or subsitute teach somewhere. the degree automaticly makes you eligible for a manager or assisant manager position as well as subsitute teaching position. I would get a one roon studio or try to find a room from a older church member (retired) who will give a teacher a break. Remember due to your college learning you can not look at the cup as half empty but as half full. You can pull this off particularly if you do not have children

The substitute teacher pools are absolutely FILLED everywhere these days due to “everyone with at least a Bachelor’s degree” flooding them, to the point where no school district is taking applications anymore. And those of us who were subs back in the 1990s are now finding that daily competition for sub work is as fierce as getting a lifeboat on the Titanic was. In fact the women on the Titanic had a BETTER chance of survival as the odds were stacked in their favor. And management jobs won’t even look at your application unless your bachelor’s degree is in “management” something or other. So unless you’ve tried to be a substitute teacher and eke out a living in this day and age don’t go around telling people it’s “always” available.

Sister, I have been homeless, so I know what it feels like to live somewhere that is deplorable. I live in hotels ran by people from India. The place was filthy.

a lot of people are one pay check from homelessness, without concern about a degree or not.
