Does Diana Ross Have a Problem with Tyler Perry Films?

Diana Ross Refuses to Partner With Tyler Perry

Diana Ross doesn’t seem to be feeling Tyler Perry.  Perry has publicly stated that he would like Ross to join him on a film project, but she hasn’t returned his calls.  Some speculate that Ross could find the big-black-man-in-a-dress model a bit too much for Hollywood.  Some think that it could be just because she is old and tired, and some think it could be a mistake.

Ross’ reaction to Perry does beg the question of whether or not Tyler Perry films are degrading toward black men and black people altogether.   Some have even said that Perry’s films are part of the emasculation of black men overall.  Nomalanga Mhauli-Moses talks about the issue in more detail.  BlackLikeMoi.com discusses the divide between Perry and Ross:

Diana Ross has no problem with positioning herself against  Tyler Perry and his films. Ross believes that the Madea franchise lacks substance and uses shallow characters, creating a low entertainment value. Perry says that he has made many efforts throughout the years to connect with the star, who has blatantly been ignoring his advances. Reportedly Ross [...]

I think we all need to take a step back and do a little review. First and foremost Mr. Perry is a filmaker who generates lots of money . He is not the moral compass for me and a whole generation of blacks. Some may take me task for saying that , but we need to stop putting that burden on him. If anything those who are supposed to be our sheperds and moral guides are failing miserably. If you don’t like the message don’t participate and give him your money , if you like it continue to patronage the Madea franchise. It would be real nice if we all practiced what we preached and held ourselves personally accountable for our actions . The stereotypes we claim he is perpetuating would eventually crumble and be consigned to history . In the meantime we still have kids walking around with pants around their knees, communities indifferent to the inequities of the education system , but will cuss the Korean grocer if there isn’t enough mombo sauce on the chicken wings . Lets refocus and re-energize we have come so far but yet it looks like a distant dream

I’m with Ishmar on this what’s scary is you all don’t see what he is doing. He has made a fortune on exploiting the black stereotype ‘For Black Girls’ could have been about any set of women of any creed so why put down black women and make out that their lives are so bleak? I don’t know anyone who resembles any of the characters in his films, worst of all they do not inspire us to transcend the stereotype. Then you wonder why racism has not moved on when we have our own people promoting it. I don’t like what he has done or what is continues to do y’all need to WAKE UP! Have some self respect.

Why is Your BLack World continuing to bring up this issue about Diane Ross and Tyler Perry’s
modern-day “Amos and Andy” TV and movie mess? For not only Ross, but anyone else that wants to be a serious actor would not get tangled up with this same old buffoonery stuff that he keeps putting out. One of these type, once in awhile, (like every blue moon) might not be too bad, but this is just about all that he wants to produce. But we black folks need to do less clowning, and be more serious about mostly everything, because we are still at the bottom of the ladder. Even Hispanics now have more businesses in the USA than blacks, and moving ahead of us. And they just got into town, so to speak. And any race that does not have anything, is always dependent on others. We need movies that will inspire blacks to do great things with our lives, and not so much focus and influence on clowning. So stay away Diane, and don’t let Perry draw you into buffoonery type acting. — Rev. George Brooks

Diana Ross sat down! She ought be running to the phone if Mr Perry calls. Only thing I dislike about Mr Perry is the fact he is sweating her. He does not need Diana Ross! Nor does he need the folk constantly bashing him. He is doing his thing and I for one will always support him! Tyler, don’t continue to reach out to folk who CLEARLY don’t want to bother. I mean really …Diana WHO?

I think that the lady Diana (the old diva) has a bit of a valid point howver Tyler has made some good films that relate to our modern times. Tyler is also good people with good intentions. Although I agree with Diana that the Madea franchise is a bit ignorant and black folks should have evolved from exploitation.

I ultimately say get that money “By Any Means Necessary”

Right now it still tough out there for a black man to be finanicially competitive.. This does not mean your work or job is a direct refelction of who you truly are in you beliefs. Let people think what the h**l they wanna think, seen?

The star of “Miss Ross,” as she likes to be called, is fading, while the star of Tyler Perry is ascendant. She should feel honored that Mr. Perry wanted her for anything. She can’t really sing and can’t act. She has made millions strutting across a stage wearing skin-tight gowns while showing lots of leg and bosom. Oh, yes! and wearing a huge and hugely expensive weave. Your time is over, but your ego continues to grow. ‘Bye, Miss Ross.

YO ISHMAR, CHECK THIS OUT MAN: …REAL QUIET NOW…SHHH….YOU READY… ANGER MANAGEMENT!!!!… IT DOES A WARPED MIND SOME GOOD. CHILL BRO… IT’S NOT THAT SERIOUS. TYLER PERRY IS A GOOD BROTHER. A d**n GOOD BROTHER. I HAD THE VERY FORTUNATE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE HIS LATEST PLAY “MADEA GET’S A JOB” AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. AS THE SISTER MENTIONED EARLIER MR. PERRY DOES PORTRAY SOME NEGATIVE IMAGES BUT AT THE SAME TIME HE HAS POSITIVE IMAGES HE PORTRAYS. HE ALSO CLARIFIES AND BREAKS DOWN THE NEGATIVE IMAGES HE PORTRAYS IN A WAY THAT EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND. IF YOU ARE ANYTHING LIKE THE NEGATIVE IMAGE HE EXPOSES HE DOES NOT BELITTLE YOU ONLY ENLIGHTEN AND SAYS IT IN A WAY THAT CAN ONLY UPLIFT YOU. I PERSONALLY AM PROUD OF TYLER PERRY & HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND I HOPE HE KEEPS ON DOING WHAT HE’S DOING. HIS SHOWS ARE FUNNY, EDUCATIONAL, & DOWN RIGHT ENTERTAINING. AT THE SHOW I ATTENDED IN DETROIT, MI HE & HIS CAST BROKE OUT INTO AN IMPROMPTU MUSICAL CONCERT AFTER THE PLAY WAS OVER. THEY PERFORMED ABOUT 7 OR 8 SONGS THAT NOBODY IN THE AUDIENCE EVER ANTICIPATED. THEY WERE ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. THAT WAS VERY ENTERTAINING. HE DID NOT HAVE TO DO THAT BUT HE DID. AND THAT’S WHAT YOU GET WITH TYLER PERRY. QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT THAT YOU CAN ENJOY. TYLER PERRY IS AN ENTERTAINER WHO EDUCATES. HE DOES BOTH VERY WELL! SO PLEASE STOP YOUR EVIL-a*s HATING ON TYLER PERRY!!! THAT GOES FOR YOU TOO DR. BOYCE!!! THE MAN HAS DONE NOTHING BUT TRY TO DO GOOD FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND YOU ALL KEEP TAKING CHEAP SHOTS @ HIM… UNWARRENTED CHEAP SHOTS!!!…WHO CARES IF DIANA ROSS MAY HAVE SNUBBED HIM? BIG DEAL…WHO CARES…HER LOSS!!! FOR WHAT REASON ARE YOU HATING ON HIM???… STOP IT!!! TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR BEFORE YOU GO TEARING DOWN SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE TORE DOWN!!! DON’T HATE…CONGRATULATE!!!

I like Tyler Perry and I enjoy his films. Madea is funny but she is not the entire story. There are many positive messages in Perry’s films. Perry has single-handedly kept Black actors and actresses employed. Black males are depicted as heros and lifesavers in his movies. The negative potrayal of black men are balanaced with positive images of black males. I have profound respect for Tyler Perry because he proved his friendship to Whitney Houston by flying her body home to her mother in New Jersey. What a monstrous effort on his part to do that for this friend. Flew Whitney home on his private jet. Who else stood up to do that?

I am almost in agreement with Diana. Tyler Perry’s movies only make black people laugh and be entertained. But if that’s what makes his money, good for him.

Not entirely true, because ALL of his films brings out all of the emotions; you laugh, you cry, you get angry and there is always a message behind each of his movies.
