As I think about the plight of the black male in America, I see a lot of reasons to be optimistic and some reasons for pessimism. On the optimistic tip, we’ve got men who are going to college, taking care of their families, living good lives and making good decisions. On the negative tip, we’ve got too many young men who believe religiously in perpetuating negative stereotypes; they listen to hip-hop songs that basically tell them, every single day, to do at least four or five things that could possibly kill them, send them to prison or make them useless to society (get high/drunk, use weapons to kill other black men, have irresponsible s*x, slang dope, waste your money, be lazy, remain ignorant, disrespect women, etc). If you do that long enough, then you’ll surely end up as either an inmate, a corpse or a degenerate. We don’t want our sons becoming any of these things.
To all the parents out there who want their sons to grow up as strong and reliable men, I thought I’d lay out a quick list of things that you should be sure to encourage your black son NOT to do as he grows into a man. I go into detail on these issues in my next book and we discuss some of this in the Janks Morton Film “Hoodwinked” that I am featured in, along with Drs. Marc Lamont Hill, Jawanza Kunjufu, Steve Perry and Ivory Toldson. Here are the things you want to encourage your black son NOT to do:
1) Remain uneducated: Education is the key out of slavery. Remaining uneducated is your key to slavery. ”Nuff” said.
2) Engage in the excessive use of drugs and alcohol: Very few men who’ve stayed high and drunk have ever been all that productive to their communities. Substance abuse has brought down entire nations. Stop thinking that every brother smokes a lil weed every now and then or pops bottles at the club on Friday nights. There are many cultures that prosper because the majority of their citizens are drug and alcohol free.
3) Be sexually irresponsible: A man can’t get ahead financially if he’s got a ton of child support obligations and he’s not a very good husband if he enters his relationship with a long list of venereal diseases.
4) Waste his money on stupid material possessions: Besides being uneducated, another easy path to slavery is to stay broke. Stop giving all your d**n money away to white people for pairs of Air Yeezys.
5) Hang with dudes that are going to bring him down: A man shouldn’t just watch what he does himself. He must also be keenly aware of the actions of those around him. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time has led to a lot of funerals and prison sentences. Remain in situations that are safe, smart and productive. We all absorb the energy of those around us, so being around negative people will only serve to dampen your potential.
These are my thoughts for the morning. Saving our boys is the key to saving our future. You can make your contribution by working overtime to save your own, so reach out and grab that boy next to you. Every killer, thug, gangsta, or deadbeat was once a highly-impressionable five-year old child looking for someone to love and guide him, but unfortunately, every adult around him dropped the ball. Don’t drop the ball on the little boy right next to you. You might be his last and only hope.

I’m with you on this one. Do not date, marry, or reproduce with women outside of your race so that black children will not be extinct.
Stop spending money and making it rain at the strip club.
Leave those 300.00 plastic sneakers in the store which are only equivalent to a flip flop with a top on it.
Leave drugs alone.
Do not waste money on 15 luxury vehicles.
Do not feed on the words of ignorant rap artists.

In regards to point #3 “…he’s not a very good husband if he enters his relationship with a long list of venereal diseases”. Just because a man has (or had) a veneral disease means he will not be a very good husband?! Really?

Dr. Boyce under your heading “remain uneducated” you might want to add that those not college material, might need to pursue military careers, since it seems that the Trade Schools dont exist for blacks any more. Also black males should be encouraged to pursue high paying jobs traditionally held by women (ex nursing, teaching, etc).
Love that comment about entering relationships with veneral diseases LOL
Under reproduction you might want to include what our parents did when a girl got in a family way too soon and that is “marry the mother, work with her, and commit to working with her to raise the children.” marriage is more about commitment than romantic love.
Dr. Boyce under “stop giving your money away on clothes, etc”, you might want to include some advice to the Buppies who do most everything right, except managing their money. They spend hundreds at bars, coffee shops, and being a BALLER ON A BUDGET lol
I hope u get that book to as many boys as possible.

I just don’t get it. Watkins will occasionally put together a worthwhile article such as this one, but will ruin it by throwing in the “F’ whitey” comment. No wonder this racism never ends. A supposedly “educated” black leader continuously encourages racism towards whites, all the while fighting the racism he and other blacks endure.
How is this piece of sh*t is still teaching at a prestigious university like Syracuse? Perhaps he should leave for Grambling so he can bash whites under the guise of a true black educator.
He encourages it to fill his coffers….

Dr. Boyce, like so many American negroes who come from a tradition of slavery, then jim crow, then a resurgence of jim crow, lose sight of the fact that everything done by whites to blacks might not be a result of rascism.
Then we have the white media constantly taking a case like Trayvon and making it about race and bombarding us with cries of rascism.
And we have PAID black leaders and white leaders who LIVE and FEED off of rascism.
We have white rascist (probably about 30% of white people – could be higher) still declaring war on blacks in any way they can get away with legally.
Blacks and whites RARELY socialize and really get to know and diaglogue with each other. Whites still are concerned about their racial purity, and have no desire to really get to know blacks for fear of losing their racial purity. They want to create people like themselves – only a white man and white woman can do that. This lack of communication facilitates black and white rascism, misunderstandings.
Dr. Boyce like most blacks is NOT talking about ALL whites, but we know that he is talking about quite a large number even in today’s day of enlightened young white men who are making a valiant effort to do better with race relations than their forefathers. People like me and Dr. Boyce must not lose sight of that, give them credit, and encourage them.

I appreciate your point. However, did he really need to throw in the “stop giving your d**n money to white people” for point #4? That’s my issue with this guy. The reason I stumbled on to this site was due to his racist diatribe on ESPN regarding a “Black-Out” theme night based on new black uniforms at a college football game that he somehow found racist. I was dumbfounded at the ease he turned something completely free of racism into a racist event.
Air Yeezys are marketed for a black guy, Kanye West, and yet he blankets all whites in his comment. How is that not blatantly racist? He deems everything racist if it is geared toward blacks, but his writing is as offensively racist as those he criticizes. I don’t understand the hypocrisy.
It is a useful article that rings true for all races until he ruins it with his racist slant. I really believe he does it to incite people in order to increase his readership; therefore, filling his coffers…

BigWill – Matter of fact I have done exactly as you described. Another poster (MAU) said the same thing and provided such a white-power / anti-black site. I have gone on that site twice and been chased off twice. It is far more racist than this site. Embarrassing to any white man in his right mind. I expect some fat skinhead n**i from Colorado to show up since I basically gave him my address after a heated disagreement. He called me a coward hiding behind a computer so I told him how to get here.
Look – I don’t agree with this slanted c**p either way. I have become fixated by it due to my extended family. Much to Derrick’s mortification, I am married to a black girl from Barbados. A light skinned black girl, but, in her words, just as black as Obama.
So bite your tongue before you call me racist; I just don’t agree with the hypocrisy.

First I think it s important to understand what Racism is. but lets first explain what it is not. it is not reactionary,it is a relationship. a power relationship in which a group of people control 98 percent of the world resources, wealth education politics, media education and access to such,in a way that refuses to allow the majority of another race of people equal opportunty. no black man in the history of the united states of america has ever had that much power, and i would argue that black people dont want to control the ability of white people to have equal and a fair chance.just a fair oportunity and thats all. therefore black people cant be racists. maybe bias prejudiced or reactionary, but those are human traits racism is a system of global white supremacy. a sysem of justice is the only solution. which would mean dstibution of power and resources,ie taking some power away from those that cosider themselves white. either that or just eliminate the world of black people and find someone else to oppress, becaue isnt that the point anyway.just kill us all

Racism is also defined as a hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. Another dictionary defines it as racial predujice or discrimination. And yes, a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
There are a lot of posts on this site that stake claim that blacks are superior to whites. And I know that most of the blacks who post on this site would LOVE the opportunity to control and rule the white race.

I agree with Dr. Watkins about not giving money to white people. We need economic empowerment and independence. In order for the Black community to uplift itself, economic empowerment and independence must occur. The only way for it to happen is to start investing in our own communities and investing in each other. Malcolm X said that for every dollar spent in a white owned business is a dollar put INTO their community and TAKEN OUT OF our community. It has nothing to do with “f whitey” but everything to do with becoming aware of ourselves and our communities and our history so that we can move forward…And don’t forget that white Americans have played a major role in our current situation. And if you don’t believe me, you should take an introduction to African-American studies (both before and after 1865).

Just to put this into the atmosphere. Racism is an element that affects all people. A friend said a couple of weeks ago, that it was set up for one group; I disagreed. It is a system that has been established to provide for all groups. The often hidden element is some benefit and some become victims of the same structure. Even thought all whites are not standing outside your door ready to pounce on every black individual, there is this ever present element called white privlege that they can use for personal gain or share and enlighten others of its existance. Until all are educated in the games that are played, one or two blocks can be removed but the structure remains standing. It is a multi-pronged demon that must be attacked by all seeking peace. If you want peace you must be willing to work for justice. The bible has its 7 deadly sins, but Mahatmas Ghandi has his 7 Social Deadly sins. Wealth w/o work, Worship w/o sacrifice, Politics w/o principles, Commerce w/o morality, Pleasure w/o conscience, Science w/o humanity and Education without character. Since many of these things are controlled by the dominate culture or given to those who won’t buck the system there is still limited equality.
