A picture of a white dad taking out his black daughter’s braids has set off the world of social media. Frank Somerville, a reporter on Oakland station KTVU showed a glimpse into his life with an image of him taking out the braids of his adopted daughter, who just happens to be black.
“So for those of you who think tv can be glamorous, this is how i spent my morning, learning how to take out my daughter’s braids. It takes a long time and a lot of patience!” He said on Facebook.
For some reason, people were touched by the image. We’re not sure if it’s because they just love to see any father spending time with his daughter or because they believe that her black daddy probably abandoned her. Here are some of the remarks:

Your wrong putting down black men like that their are plenty of single fathers out in world who are african american who has been taking care of the children for years doing the hair and dealing with problems just being there period and you judge based on some stupid statistic that black men are no show your wrong for that they don’t get an award or exploit themselves like that to show the public. That’s wrong black women been doing hair for young girls or years that’s nothing new. the media is soo racist against blk people it’s always chaos and negativity they display on the televison.

Derrick, From reading many of your comments you sound like a lot of the children that I work with. Someone crying out for help and blaming everything on the white man/woman. Get sdome help you’re probably one of those deadbeat dads and it’s hurting you that someone of another race is taking care of your child. I am black and don’t have time for debate, Baby just pray about the way you feel, about this issue and be a standup dad if you have children. I’m not enslave and very educated. GOD BLESS YOU.

For those of you complaining about the “WHITE FATHER” taking down his “BLACK DAUGHTERS” hair, maybe there is some jealousy on your part because YOU know that your “BLACK FATHER” would not do this for, or has not been there for you. Why do we have to look for negativiness in things that white people do for our children. Where were you when this child need a loving home, mother, and father. If you can’t help her than why complain about someone that has helped her. By him allowing her to have the braids he allowed her the opportunity to embrace her culture as a black person. Let’s STOP looking for bad when there is GOOD. I BET ALL OF YOU COMPLAINING CALL YOURSELVES CHRISTIANS,DO you think that GOD CARES THAT HE’S WHITE OR THAT HE’S TAKING CARE OF ONE OF HIS MANY PRECIOUS JEWELS. i send many prayers up for this father.

Derrick, are you really that freakin’ stupid? I truly hope you are being sarcastic. Do you really believe this white man adopted this girl yesterday and he’s taking out her braids because they are “too black”? Here’s a news flash…braids have to be taken out and redone every so often because hair grows. The father is taking out her braids so her hair can be rebraided.

I was once at a gathering for black folks where two white ladies were manning a booth for adoption of black children. This gathering was sort of like a fair where various people had booths and most of the booths were busy except this particular one manned by these two white ladies. I stopped by and engaged them and they told me some heart rendering stories about how difficult it was to place black children along with the fact that black folks generally aren’t adopting black children. When one looks at the situation of black kids in general, they have a hard time generally as they may in dysfunctional family settings, in foster care or in an adoption netherworld.
Talking with these two ladies was an eye opener as I was generally against the idea of cross racial adoption previously, but now just come down on the side of who is going to give the child love as a child is better with that than not. Just my two cents.

OR…from the picture you can see, the braids are FUZZY. Maybe he doesn’t want his little girl looking like a dusty kid whose parents don’t keep up with her. I’m going to pray for you, Derrick. The world is changing, this picture is beautiful. He could just send her to a salon, or he could see that this is a time to learn about his child. Stop thinking like a slave.
