50 Cent is known to say things that he knows will grab headlines, so there’s no way to know whether he should be believed when he says he made $80 million dollars from his now defunct G-Unit sneaker brand. (I mean, isn’t he the same man who originally said he made $400 million dollars from his Vitamin Water deal?) But if 50 Cent did make $80 million from a shoe that never caught on in any community, including the urban market that he was supposed to be successful at marketing to, then more power to him:
Kanye told us at the BET awards that the “Yeezy’s jumped over the Jumpmans.”
He’s not the first rapper to take on Nike in a battle of the kicks.
Remember 50 Cent‘s G-Unit sneakers? They were originally created to compete with the Nike Air Force 1′s and they had a pretty short shelf life. Everybody was giving 50 the side eye when they heard he was collaborating with Reebok– especially at a time when everybody was all about Air Force 1′s. Nelly had everybody wanting two pair.
But before you chalk 50′s Reebok collabo up as a loss, you should hear how much he made off the deal. 50, ever the businessman, says he made around $80 million working with Reebok.
