It seems that we’re loving Lionel Batiste as much in death as we did in life. Being the entertainer that he always was, his children decided that he could entertain us one more time with a highly unique funeral. The kids propped him up against a pole during the ceremony, reminding them in death of how he was in life. This was probably one of the most interesting public funerals we’ve ever seen.
New Orleans is a unique place in itself, always different from the rest, giving us something that almost seems to come from another country. But we love the city for its uniqueness, and it will always be a valuable part of black culture.
BlackBlueDog.com tells the story about Batiste:
Uncle Lionel’s send-off is as unique as the man himself
When family, friends and fans of New Orleans musician, Lionel Batiste came to pay their respects, “Uncle Lionel” stood there to greet them.
It was an uncommon way to view the body, but one that the children of the beloved musician agreed upon.
Several of Mr. Batiste’s children and Charbonnet-Labat-Glapion owner Louis Charbonnet, concocted the idea of standing him up for his wake.
