Most of us are aware of the controversy over Gabby Douglas’ hair. Most commentators scolded an imaginary villain within the black community over the choice to focus on Gabby’s hair over the fact that she was the first black woman to ever win a gold medal in the women’s all-around event.
But really ask yourself, how many black people do you actually know who give a d**n about Gabby’s hair? Probably none. So, we at Your Black World have concluded that the Gabby hair conversation has been driven by an opponent that barely even exists. There are ignorant people out there always, but most black people were congratulating Gabby, not scrutinizing her.
But most of us would also agree that Gabby deserves whatever she wants after pulling off her amazing feat. So, the man known for covering makeover topics for TLC’s “What Not to Wear” has stepped in and given Gabby a hair makeover.
Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson took Gabby in and gave her the hair to die for. She looks as beautiful as always and seems excited about her new gift. Gabby shared her excitement about the experience on Twitter:
“Ted Gibson Is AWESOME!!! LOVE HIM SOO MUCH!!! Special thank you to my Gold Medal Celebrity Hair Stylist!”
Good for you Gabby. But remember, you were always beautiful to us, even in a ponytail. Check out an extraordinary poem about Gabby’s ponytail, performed by Jasmine Waiters. It’s amazing.

You know Gabby and all others. There will always be
someone who will complain about everything you do no
matter how good, or how beneficial, or how righteous
you try to be. There will be those who gripe because
they are jealous, and have nothing else to do with their
lives, and there are those who would like to cause you much grief
and see you hurt and suffer, even though you have done
them no harm. I say to that, just keep on pushing. You
are who you are, and you know who you are, which is another
reason why they are so upset. You see, they have not yet
discovered who they are, nor how much good they could
do if they bothered to try to find out. Believe me I know,
the same thing happened to me, and I have no wealth or any of of that just good old common sense and quite a bit of
self-confidence, and believe me there are those who will
dislike you for that. Good Luck To You Always.

Gabby is beautiful, Awesome, and a role model! Go get you some life! Haters! Go get a life. She will be so filthy rich, she will be able to fly in a hairstylist to handle her hair, if she so desires! Black women just plain looks good in ponytails! Period!

Congratulations to Gabby on her accomplishments.
She has proven for many youth and adults what it means when you stick to your positive goals.
Thank you very much!

What happened to the young woman on the volley ball team with the “natural hair”? I have not heard anything about her…have not even seen pictures of the young African-American women on other teams! Where are those images? Need our so-called black media to be held accountable for showing us more “positive images” of ourselves!

I liked Gabby as she was. She was beautiful, gorgeous and innocent looking. I hate all of that Asian hair. We don’t need it. It only proves that we do not love ourselves as God made us.

Gabby’s new hairstyle takes her innocense away! Gibson is not the proper stylist for children. For show women who want to look sexy – maybe! But for a young, Black girl who’s about to be on a cereal box to attract kids, NO WAY!
I don’t know whose idea it was to transform Gabby into a woman who looks provacative, but it was a BAD idea to select Gibson. Actually, he should have referred Gabby to someone who would keep her looking like a kid, at last for a little while longer!

So “sick and tired of this issue with hair.”
Hair is nothing more than that, hair!
There are so many more important issues in life to deal with it.

That’s too bad she gave in to that krakkerized lie. Her hair was perfectly fine like it was and the last thing she needed was some “celebrity” stylist’s hand in it. They hardly ever know what they are doing.

Ted Gibson. This is not a style. It’s the “unstyle” that I despise so much among Black women. Take extra long weave and part it down the middle and “voila”, there you have it. The only thing missing is the huge fan to create the “wind blown” look.
This man should’ve known better, but what would you expect from a c**n who probably only style causcasion hair. A pony tail would’ve have been more age appropriate. Somebody needs to find that pony tail, put a blind fold on him and play “pin the tail on that grinning honkey”

Black people we’re becoming irelavent, change or become a non factor soon. Its already starting to happen. They dont have to regard us and they wont. Do yhe right thing here on out. Tell on the killers and criminals to clean up the neighborhood. Or our familys will continue to suffer. Dont let your kids become dumbed down to believe they can talk slang all day long and misspell everyline and think its cool to do so. Just a start. Snitching is a great thing no matter who does it. PLEASE KEEP SNITCHING I BEG OF YOU.

Ok. Do you hear yourselves? Who cares about this baby’s hair? Let us….as black people take the responsibility and accountability to Gabby’s inability to concentrate due to our stupid remarks as a culture. A man who forgets their past is destined to repeat it. The media only reported what we put out as a culture on Gabby. Just imagine if we were this hard on yo saggin cuzns? Let’s try growing up as a culture and stop reflecting our own self hatred by cutting others down. Think about it

Gabby is slated to be a millionaire. So her hair will never be a problem. Will her mind, worldview, religious, and political beliefs be a problem? That we may never know.

Junie-I know what thick hair is. It’s that stuff where you can hardly see the scalp because it is so thick. Is that the kind you talking about sweetie??? You preaching to the choir! Your tone is very immature (just mind ya business??? Who are you anyway. Nevermind, cause I dont’ care!!!

There’s the posibility that she has always wanted to get her hair done but just didn’t have the time or money. She looks like she has very long and thick hair, unless you have hair like this you have no idea how difficult and timely it is to maintain. My daughters both had long thick hair, I would have loved to keep it “natural” as many fanatics keep harping on, but the truth of the matter is, it’s hard as h**l to deal with unless you were born with straight or loose curls. It took me 4 or more hours to wash and untangle my two daughters hair. It can be painful also. Pressing it out was a HUGE blessing! Soo, to all of those “don’t change a thingers”, it is HER hair to do with it as she pleases, she can fry it, perm it, lock or unlock it! You may be able to wear your 3 inches of hair matted to your head with pride, but when your hair reachs below the middle of your back, being natural may not be an option for the OWNER! Just mind ya business!

Who said anything about your hair and your children’s hair? Sound like you are trying to convince yourself rather than others.
I and my daughter bother have thick thick long hair and I researched, tried many products and found a way to manage our hair without pressing and or relaxing. Btw, just because a person has three inches of hair does not mean it is matted. Why all the cruel words? You are doing what you accuse others of!
However you have a choice to do what’s best for your hair. Just be mindful of that heat damages hair over time.

Just need to leave that lil girl ALONE and stop making her and millions of other lil beautiful African-American girls have UNHEALTHY attitudes about their hair. And buying into the HAIR STRAIGHTENING MACHINE.
This industry quietly makes BILLIONS and what’s so killing is, I never read about the hair product industry giving back to the people who keep ‘em rich.

Its hard to tell but I hope he did not put a relaxer in her hair. Her hair was just fine as it was. She did not need to cater to the little idiots that could find anything wrong with her.

Gabby:
You are a beautiful Black young lady. Stay who you are and besides being beautiful you are great and will become greater. We all hope you will be an inspiration to our young girls.
One more truth: anytime you can pull all of your hair back from your face and look good – girl you are a pronounced beauty. When I was your age our community was ponytails and no one complained.

I agree. It’s so sad that in order for African-Americans to be accepted into the dominant culture, we feel we have to make ourselves look as European as possible. I would have preferred to see Gabriel Douglas with her natural hair without the extensions, straighteners, and whatever they put in to make it look European. There is nothing wrong with natural African hair.

While I agree that the whole hair ordeal is ridiculous, I actually have heard black people complain left and right. My comment to them is, “When you win multiple gold medals with perfect hair, speak up. Otherwise, shut up.”

Amen, Renee. I hope someone teaches Gabby to accept who she is–hair and all. They want to use her to make money and to control other young people (keep watching), but want to make sure she adopts their traits such as long straight hair. That is how Michael Jackson got started. Be strong Gabby! Don’t lose yourself or your superior traits.

Great article. Thank you for saying briefly discussing the nonexistent villian within the black community. Every black person I know were proud of Gabby and didn’t give a d**n about her hair. This was white people doing what they do best – obsess about black people. White media created some bullshit and made it into a mainstream topic to dissect and belittle this young woman’s acheivement at the Olympic Games. They can’t stand it when a black person rise to greatness and so they had to quickly find a way to divert attention away from her performance to something like her hair.

You are so right in your commentary! The question I would like to ask the person or persons who came up with this ridiculous critique of a champion, and future millionaire is, by whos standards are you judging? Miss. Douglas looks are fine with me, and millions of other people. There’s a minute group of haters who will recycle and redistribute this foolish critique about her hair. How many Gold Metals have they won? Gabby has always look great to me!

One of the things that troubles me about our community is that we spend to much time over things that don’t matter. This young lady worked so hard with the support of her mother and a few fools want to talk about her hair? WOW! nevertheless, thank God for the very nive hair stylist who blessedher with a new style. There was a time when our community wasn’t so rough and hard on each other we were more closer and respected each other more. What happen?
I comment Gabby and her Mom for excelling.

Well spoken. I just can’t believe all of the DRAMA about this young lady’s hair. Really. Let’s just dismiss the fact that she is an olympic gold medal winner and concentrate on her hair. Good grief!! As a community I honesty believe that we are on the road to perdition!!
