Man Killed by Police After Officer Hits His Daughter with His Motorcycle

An off-duty police officer in Chicago killed a man on Saturday night after a fight that ensued after the man’s 4-year old daughter had been injured by the officer’s motorcycle.  The officer was going home on Saturday night when he claims that 4-year old Taniyah Middleton got in the way of his bike.

He says that he jumped off the bike to avoid hitting the 4-year old, but the bike slid and hit the girl and her 18-year old cousin.

The girl’s father, Christopher came out of a restaurant when he saw the accident and allegedly attacked the officer.  That’s when the man was shot by the officer’s gun.

“Chris was a great father,” Middleton’s cousin Mathis Hoskin told ABC’s Chicago affiliate WLS. “He was always helpful, never mad – always happy with a smile on his face.”

Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, says that the officer was not at fault and the girl’s father needed to be shot that night.

“He was on his way home and a 4-year-old ran out into traffic,” said Camden. “He had a choice of hitting her head-on or dumping his bike and taking the personal injury to avoid hitting the 4-year old – which he did. But as he dumped the bike, it slid across the road. She wound up getting nicked by the bike. He wound up with a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder.”

“After the accident he gets up and the girl’s father became irate with him and comes over to him,” Camden continued. “The officer tells him, ‘I’m the police. Take it easy.’ The guy says, ‘I don’t give a [bleep] who you are’ and hits him in the face. Another man hits him from behind. The officer goes to the ground. They’re beating him and he’s about to lose consciousness. He pulls his weapon to defend himself at that point, fires one shot, and kills one of the individuals who happens to be the father of the 4-year-old.”

“Had the father simply stood there instead of attacking a police officer he might be alive today,” Camden stated.

Middleton’s relatives say that the father’s actions are understandable.  They also say that the officer never identified himself to be with the police force after the incident.

“Of course a father would be upset at the initial reaction of seeing the child in this condition and he confronted the guy and they got into a confrontation,” Middleton’s uncle Darrell Davis told WLS.

“He never let anyone know he was a police officer until after he shot him,” witness Cordell Haggard said to WLS.

The girl and the officer were taken to the hospital after the incident.   Chicago police say the situation is under investigation.

Yall have a lot to say. Every incident between black and white ISN’T RACIALLY MOTIVATED and anyone who thinks so is crazy it perhaps racist themselves. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. What would any of you fine upstanding African American men would’ve done if addressed with this incident? And in case you DON’T KNOW I’m from the streets too. NO WHERE in this re-enactment of events did the witnesses say he was speeding, driving, reckless, or anything. Notice they didn’t say that HE DIDN’T AVOID THE CHILD. HE DID WHAT ANY ONE OF YALL WOULD’VE DONE. 2 ON 1 AND IF YOU HAD A GUN YOU WOULDN’T HAVE. I had a 3 year old run RIGHT OUT IN FRONT ME WIT MY FAMILY IN DA VEHICLE. HOWBOUT WATCH YOUR KIDS.

I wasn’t there so cannot comment on what the police officer did or didn’t do. I am curious about the speed the officer was driving that he didn’t have time to slow and/ or swerve? I assume that like here in the UK, America also has certain speed limits in residential areas.

As a mother I do understand the fathers response to what happened. While his daughter wasn’t seriously injured his mind would have been running with all of the “what ifs” and a kind of panic/ rage would set in. Although I do think that two guys beating up on the officer to the point he is on the ground is a bit extreme.

One other thing that confuses me is that surely even in a blind rage someone would recognise a gun being pointed at them and would stop attacking? Would that not be an automatic reaction?

I hear all the time about victims unable to describe assailants whom have held them at gun point, however they can describe the gun in great detail. This is supposedly because a person becomes paralysed to the point they cannot look anywhere other than down the barrel of the gun pointed at them. Not sure exactly how true this is since I’ve never had the bad luck to be held at gun point. However I do think any sane person would have stopped the attack for long enough that a someone with law enforcement training could have taken control of the situation. Makes me think that maybe the officer didn’t give a warning before shooting…

Despite which side was in the right (is there a right side when a child has lost a parent?). My heart goes out to the little girl, who not only had the frightening experience of having a motorcycle charging at her, but she then viewed her father in what seems to have been a brutal fight. Not only did she lose him but she actually saw his murder!!

What’s most appalling is out of all the comments left, very few people seem to have given a thought for what this little girl has gone through and how this will affect her throughout her lifetime.

We would much rather argue and point blame than spare a second to say a little prayer for an innocent little girl whom witnessed her daddy die.

Dude “thugged up” and turned an accident into a nightmare. If everyone acted like that after an accident the world would be a nightmare. Its the dad’s and the girl’s cousin’s fault that she is without a father now. The cousin is lucky he isnt dead too. Got to be careful who you start slugging these days. Someone will more likely shoot your a*s than fight you back….

I see Derrick is still posting his calm, considered, helpful and unbiased comments. Such reactions are exactly why the police are so quick to use their weapons.
This series of events seems to have been a series of over-reactions, but unless one witnessed them, it is difficult to properly assess the rights and wrongs.
The one TRULY disgusting aspect of the report is this “Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, says that the officer was not at fault and the girl’s father NEEDED TO BE SHOT that night”.
NEEDED TO BE SHOT. What kind of comment is that? Needed to be calmed down? yes. Needed to be restrained? yes. Needed to have reacted less violently? yes. But is there not something wrong with police procedure when a father, shocked by seeing his little daughter having been hit by a motor bike, NEEDS TO BE SHOT??!!!

I truly think the OFFICEr was at fault. If he was being attacked, he could have easily just fired a warning shot; NOT a shot that killed someone.Aren’t officers trained to restrain themselves? Why did he have to solve this with his gun? Camden is a bold faced LIAR! #1 for making that statement and #2 because he knows that did NOT go down like he said. How can police officers get away with murder in the name of law. They are suppose to PROTECT US! NOT MURDER US! Police lie, lie lie. How can they be trusted?????????????

This is truly sad… The father needed to show more restraint…First of all why is a 4 yr old in the street, there is no excuse for that, and how can the deceased father be upset to the point of jumping a man that just dump his bike for his kid… This is a sad example of misplaced ans mishandled anger.

To me the events that initiated this long chain of unfortunate events still remains unclear especially, the one the regarding the little girl been hit by the bike. How is it that the little girl managed to get hit by the runaway bike after the police officer statement indicating that he dumped the bike to avoid hitting her?

The father’s reaction is understandable but the other man that hit the officer from behind should have been trying to calm the father down instead. He should have realized that the father was having a natural reaction to seeing his child hurt. It should not have mattered whether the man was the police or not. He could have saved his friend’s life and the family a lot of grief. So sad.

Black guys have no respect for the law but why should they when they don’t have respect for themselves. I am black and I work for the law enforcement so I see what goes on, so nobody on here can tell me other wise. The father should have been focus on helping his daughter instead of worrying about the police office hitting her by accident. s**t happen, get them some help and move on. And in that order

How can anyone say the father was wrong. If it wasnt a cop and he had a gun and kill the man, would that be ok too? People who never had things happen to them like that would say the father was wrong. A father is a father first. The cop should have sayd it from the beginning and showd his badge. Its just sad how we quick to throw a black man under the bus. What if it was a white man that got killd by a black cop, what would be sayd?

The officer never identified himself. So the version Camden is giving is a lie. There were too many witnesses who have already stated the officer said nothing. He only shot afterwards. Why is it okay for people to devalue the life of African Americans and blame the decease for doing what most fathers would have done in that situation? Have you ever noticed when a white person protects their family or fight against the police, it is always noble or rightfully resisting power? Have you ever noticed they become irate when a white person is at the receiving end of a police led murder or assault but seemingly callous towards the same situation when the victim is black? Make no mistake the officer would have likely identified himself if the father was white. I’m not saying he wouldn’t have shot him, but he wouldn’t be so d**n quick to kill him. But seeing a black person in the midst of an attack can cause that happy finger to pull the trigger. It seems no matter what, a decease African American is always at fault and whites love to point out the fact that black life doesn’t matter. It’s in the way they say it in press releases, news conferences, interviews, or what have you. h**l, you can be walking back from a convenience store and some a*****e follows you, then attacks you and when you resist their attack they shoot you … and yet it is still your fault for defending yourself against their attack. I have always noticed this narrative as a teenager into my adult life. I guess this s**t will stop when blacks say f**k the justice system and start killing officers who kill blacks. Start sending a message. You shoot us and we will kill you. Enough said.

Stop trying to make more out of this than it was. He hurt himself to avoid hitting a child that should have been better supervised. He then identify himself as a cop and this ignorant person decides hew was going to assault him. The copy had every right to protect himself. @Poor David the protector should have been watching his kid and keeping her out of the street.

So easy to believe a bullshit version from a highly corrupt police department than the witnesses who were ACTUALLY there to see this tragic event unfold. The a*****e never identified himself as a cop. Second, the little girl was walking with her 18 YEAR OLD COUSIN across the street when this b*****d came down the street on his motorcycle. They were not jaywalking or purposefully running across the street thinking, “Lets see if we can get into a collision with the guy on the motorcycle. Maybe someone can die today.” I swear you people make me so sick with this sick a*s blame the dead victim mentality.

The police should stick with a formula that works: shoot Black men and walk away.

When the Police begin to shoot Black women the way they shoot Black Men, this is what will happen(accident or not).

Black women are not going to go out and shoot officals that kill their sons. It seems that Black men will not either.

But, enter killing Black women and girls and the Black man as Protector shows up on the scene.

The mystery is how to get this Protector to stay by his family’s side and endure and come out on the other side- Together.
