Battle rapping is lyrical warfare against another MC to show and prove who is the best. This art was first truly demonstrated by Kool Moe Dee who challenged Busy Bee Starski in December 1981, at a contest Kool Moe Dee was originally judging. What followed was a crushing defeat of the crowd favorite Busy Bee, who relyed on chants and crowd participation. This famous battle changed the landscape of Hip-Hop and introduced a new style and cadence to MCing.  Words are the weapons and wordplay displays skill. It is a sport designed for the furious and not for the meek.

Battling has mostly been an underground phenomenon and training ground for many MCs featuring more complex rhyme schemes and meter. There has been a resurgence in popularity and displayed on shows on BET and MTV.
