Using satire and comedy as his vehicle, writer-director Justin Simien is hoping to make his popular internet trailer for “Dear White People” into a feature film. The fictional story follows four black students as they grapple with issues of race and identity at their predominately white Ivy league college, Manchester University. Since its premiere this summer, “Dear White People” has received over 770,000 views on YouTube and $40,000 dollars raised for pre-production costs. The popularity of the trailer has caught the eye of Hollywood. Veteran film producer Stephanie Allain has joined the project as Executive Producer. She’s best known for her work on movies “Hustle & Flow” and “Black Snake Moan.”

In a recent interview with CNN, Justin Simien talks about the motivation behind his film trailer: “I’m trying to bring a new story to the [film] screen. I’m trying to say something new about the Black experience that I don’t think is really out there. I think it’s important for the culture to bring new stories.”

I think we can all agree with Mr. Simien’s sentiments for the need for new stories on film, television and the Internet. “Dear White People” looks to break the Tyler Perry mode of cinema by bringing an alternative perspective to the Black experience. If the trailer is any indication of how the feature film will look then we’re in for a treat. Check out the trailer for “Dear White People” after the jump.
