Harlem Teen, Alexis Sumpter, Was Accidentally Cuffed When Cops Speculated She Was Too Old To Have a Student MetroCard
Fifteen-year-old Alexis Sumpter, claims she was roughed up and handcuffed by NYPD for being ‘too old’ to use a student MetroCard. Although Sumpter was not arrested or given a summons for the incident that occurred on July 26th, she says she was shaken and humiliated by the experience. “They called me liar,” she recollects. “Then they grabbed me by my arms and flung me up the stairs. I kept saying, ‘I’m only 15 — why are you guys doing this?’ They said they didn’t owe me an explanation,” she said.

The article I read said the girl was attending summer school. She had been robbed and both her school ID and her phone had been stolen. The student Metro card had been issued to all summer school students. A call to the school or to her parents would have cleared up the misunderstanding. The child’s wrists were injured by the handcuffs that were placed on her. She was taken to a hospital for treatment. I hope to read about a future lawsuit.

According to the reports on the radio station WINS(1010 AM), the girl was using a metro card that was given to students to use for going to school. And school hasn’t started yet in NYC.
