Now that Nicki Minaj has officially joined Mariah Carey as a judge on this season’s “American Idol,” TMZ reports that the tension is already brewing between the two stars.

According to reports, when Mariah Carey was initially informed by the producers of  ”American Idol” that Nicki Minaj would be joining her as a judge on the show, she hung up on them. However, Mariah Carey denied any tension between she and Nicki Minaj when paparazzi caught up with her prior to the official announcement of Nicki Minaj’s participation on the show. “What tension? There’s no tension!“ she told the paparazzi.

On that same day, paparazzi caught up with Mariah Carey again and asked her who’d she’d like to join her on “American Idol,” in which the music icon said “I’d answer that, but I’m not quite sure how.” When paparazzi jested that the singer should judge the show by herself, she was not opposed to the idea. “Naturally … why not?” she said.

During the first taping of the show in NYC on Sunday, the tension that has been brewing between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj apparently showed face when the two went at it.  When Nicki started critiquing a contestant, Mariah Carey interrupted the rapper on several occasions. Each time Mariah interrupted, Nicki fought back by loudly talking over Mariah. The two, who have collaborated on a Mariah Carey’s song titled “Up Out of My Face,” may have been strategically picked by the show’s producers for a touch of drama.
