The unmanned U.S. killing machines, otherwise known as drones, are getting smaller and smaller. So small in fact that the U.S. military wants its defense suppliers to build a tiny drone that can kill a person within a six mile radius. How tiny is that? According to a recent solicitation by the military, it wants this miniature drone, otherwise known as a Lethal Miniature Aerial Munition System (LMAMS), to weigh less than five pounds.
The envisioned LMAMS, a “loitering precision guided munition” is designed for quick missions to take out specific targets, and the Army’s had its eye on something like it for years. Its small size means it can’t carry a lot of fuel. As first reported by (subscription only) InsideDefense, the Army needs it to stay aloft for a half hour at most.
