Derrick Rose, Father Michael Pfleger Hold Charity Tournament to Slow Chicago Violence

With gun violence at a high this summer Chicago has gotten a lot of bad press over the last few months. This spurred The Interrupters and Father Michael Pfleger to sponsor a Peace Basketball Tournament at his church, Saint Sabina on Chicago’s south side on 9/22/2012. Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Isaiah Thomas were among the NBA notables from past and present that attended the event. Also Taj Gipson and some of the Luv-A-Bulls attended the event too.

The event was put together to bring rival gang members together and show them that life has much more to offer than the streets that they live and die for. They hoped that this would show them that they have things in common and it could help quell some of the violence and it went off without any problems.

According to the organizers, the tournament was just the start and they hope to do other things in the future to help get gang members off street corners and back into productive society.

Marlon Lee who was 36, from Chicago Heights, worked with the group off and on for a year and a half to help to stamp out violence in Chicago.  Read more here

Father Pfleger, these basketball stars, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan and all of the other black leaders in Chicago have got to demand that the mayor and city council demand that the police get busy and clean up the drugs and guns in Chicago, without further excuses. And if they can’t, start withholding their pay checks, or fire some of them. Or the black leaders need to demand that the National Guard be brought in to patrol and clean up the city. — Rev. Hopefully they’ll be able to touch at least one. Every little bit helps.
