A little over four months ago, a Florida judge sentenced 31-year-old Marissa Alexander to 20 years in prison for three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Alexander fired a gun into the air in an attempt to scare her violent husband, who’d gone into a rage after reading text message exchanges between Alexander and her ex-husband. “That’s when he strangled me. He put his hands around my neck,” Alexander said.
In a desperate attempt to save her life, she broke from his grip and ran into the garage to flee the home in her car. Allowing her panic to get the best of her, she forgot to grab her keys and couldn’t open the garage door. Alexander found one solution that could save her from her crazed husband. “I knew I had to protect myself,” she said. “I could not fight him. He was 100 pounds more than me. I grabbed my weapon at that point.”

There are things being done for this case. Even the NAACP is in on it. We as a people do stick together sometimes.

This black sister shouldn’t be behind no ones walls so one need to stand up and help her. The judge is wrong and he know this no one was killed or hurt but at the same time she was getting beat up. I pray someone with power will come to her help for she need to be home in her own bed and not behind the white system walls i believe she will be free one day.com!!

This is insane! There is no justice in this country for the poor or people of color! Where are the lawyers? This is the place where you can stand your ground and kill a black teen ager, but you cannot fire a shot in the air to stop someone from killing and beating you? Where is the justice department?
20 years for firing a gun in The Sunshine state? Hog wash!!!

This is really sad. However,Black people can’t know everything going on in the U.S. Maybe the reason most have been quiet is because they haven’t heard about it. I didn’t know anything about it. I have a feeling that, whether she could have avoided it or not, the county or state officials are trying to make an example of her.
Maybe because of the Trayvon Martin case.
Now that this case has been exposed hopefully there will be a national outcry about it. Because if he was indeed choking her he could have killed her or rendered her unconscious and the children would still be in jeopardy. Her lawyer was not on the job, this is unbelievable!

we never stick together! this is why we have so many terrible situations in our comunnities . iv it aint our loved one we say” i aint got nuttn to do wit that! ima post this wherever i can and see if i can get some radio personality to menuion this on the airwaves. also we should also find out who the judge is and vote him out!

Over 450 years of slavery and Blacks in America still act as if they are going to get a fair shake in this corrupt system. Yeah he prolly did choke her. What is she doing talking to the Ex in the first place? I am not condoning his actions but no one just comes home and explodes for no reason. The fact is people believe in a system that continues to fail its people more than the bible. All in the name of selfishness. Look around the debt is rising by the minute meaning the DREAM of going against everything that bible states not to do is fading. Meaning everyone around the world doesn’t believe in thee dream as they once did. When are blacks American going to learn? Go to war for a county who punishes US every chance they get especially if your educated. WAKE UP. WOMEN be women not men. Men be men not women. Don’t say words live by your words.

where not silent I have written and called before her sentence as well as after. expressing my disbelieve this collage grad with no priors Was charged/convicted of these said charges My understanding of the case her child/baby was present And she didn’t have the heart to Kill this creep who has had several of these kind of charges/beating up girlfriends As he has said out of his own mouth… Your article should enclose also ways and means for All those interested in ways they can lend support to correct this injustices

She got 20 years because of the 10-20-Life law in Florida. If you use a weapon in the commission of a felony the mandatory sentence is 10 years. If you fire that weapon the MANDATORY sentence is 20 years. Why was she charged with a felony? Because she discharged the firearm into the air….there were two childre present. By firing into the air, there was a possibility that one or both of the children could have been hit by a ricocheting bullet. The other point to her conviction, was that she went into the garage where the threat of imminent danger was no longer a factor…She left the garage and went back into the house where her abuser (and the danger) was. You cannot use self-defense if you put yourself in danger…the same as if you are attacked and your attacker starts to leave, you can’t shoot them when they are leaving.

You grab your gun, But forget your keys, Means she, Like Zimmerman wanted to regulate or set it off in the 1st place.. Here the community is quiet, Where the character of this couple didn’t warrant community intervention on her part.. The “three” charges of mis_gun handling stuck regardless her defense of physical assault by those who examined the details more closely… Gun play is an big issue in this country..

RECANTING my previous comment., The husbands abusive character is under scrutiny, Whereas the 31yr old mother of three, no criminal record, bad judgements on a few occasions. One major decision was her choice in men, Which according to other articles he has five previous “failed” relations with five of his baby’s mommas.. The court 20 year decision on a 31 yr old mother of three “w/no criminal record”, Justice?, That’s the heartbreaker.. I see stand your ground has to be to the letter. Regarding Zimmerman,(used the letter) My “opinion” he set Travon up in order to regulate..

That’s her side of the story not the dead husband. If she was beaten with bruise’s or had battle scar’s then I could believe her side of the story, Why couldn’t she just kept running down the street to a neighbor’s house? The gun’s seem to be the easy solution out of her problem and it landed her 20yrs in prison.

Thats whats wrong with the world everyone is so into this new technology that they ae loosing there lives and freedom..This woman dosent deserve 20 because she scared her husband..The fat f**k probably need to be shot, we werent there and I believe her, he probably did chock and and even tried to kill her..he didnt die he still breathing and liveing with freedom..If she got 20 years for shooting in the air GEORGE ZIMMERMAN better get life with no prole or put to death…Only time will tell but I hope and pray that thie young lady be released and give a lighter sentence it really isnt that serious..

This judge must be nuts. Everyone has the right to protect themselves. I just thought about the Zimmerman case. While talk about injustice.
