Your Black Bloggers: Is Beyonce Really a Good Role Model for Sasha and Malia?

President Obama recently made headlines by stating that Beyonce is a good role model for his daughters.  The statement was met with controversy, since it’s hard to imagine Sasha and Malia gyrating on stage half-naked.  Barack may also want to note that Beyonce made headlines by doing a provocative lapdance on Magi Johnson on the BET Awards.  Lap dances are most notably performed by strippers.

To get some perspective on the matter, we asked the YBW team what they think.  You can read the comments below and feel free to leave your own as well:

YBW team question of the day: Is Beyonce really a good role model for young girls? Would you want your daughter to grow up and be just like Beyonce?

    • I think that if you want your girls to grow up and go to college and get “good jobs”, Beyonce is NOT a good role model. If, on the other hand, you want them to pursue their passions, remain humble, even in the spotlight, abandon other people’s notion of what a wife and mother SHOULD look like and be your own woman, then I say she is an excellent role model. Everyone has their own path in life and Beyonce shows us that an unconventional life does not have to be full of drama and scandal. She has always conducted herself with grace and dignity and there is a clear difference between who she is as a person and who she is as a performer.

    • I believe she is a role model in the sense of being a record-breaker in all that she does (some would argue all of her achievements haven’t been earned fairly). She has incredible tenacity (Who in the h**l can sing and dance wearing 6 inch heels and still hold the notes???). And, she actually allowed her husband to court her for years prior to getting married and having her baby.

I would want my daughter to be herself, but I do think Beyonce has some achievements that are worth respecting.

    • No I would not my daughter to grow up to be like Beyonce

    • People should not confuse “there’s something I can learn from this person” with “this person is a role model.” Yes, young girls can learn what tenacity and hard work can bring from watching Beyonce, but I wouldn’t necessarily want any daughter of mine listening to songs like “Bootylicious” and “Bills, Bills, Bills”, and using them as guides for life. Beyonce is a musician with some redeeming qualities that girls can learn from. Harriet Tubman is role model. There’s a difference.

    • I think B is an excellent role model for women period. But she has grown into that position. Being a celebrity in this industry , you are automatically place in the position of role model whether you like it or not. But her approach to handling life situations and her discreteness is what makes her a beautiful role model for women. Good examples are the fact that her personal issues are not made public. The most that you hear about her is through speculation and allegations. Her life has been strategically mapped out and planned to the best of her ability and others. She is a role model for the new generation of young adults. She is someone that they can relate to.

    @ Timothy Greer ~ I agree!

Beyonce, okay, yes, she’s beautiful, fine body, rich, married, and she can sing.
However, she is not a good role model for Blue Ivy Carter (daughter), or any young girl.

Why? Beyonce’s show is filled with seduction as she act as a succubus sexually subduing her audiences, as she lip her finger suggesting oral s*x, opening her legs wide, & then placing her mic next to her v****a. Ending her sect with the Rock-a-fella hand sign, an open v****a, and the mic the p***s entering the v****a.
Beyonce loves the center of attendant, misleading people, s*x, money, and power.

Really, I feel sorry for her because she has no one around her that care to say, Beyonce, you do not have to do these things, just sing & dance without becoming an over s*x robot. Beyonce, you are causing young girls to dance opening their legs, which, in turn, could cause them to get raped.

      @Debbie:

We are not nuts because we have the FREEDOM to voice our choice about, who are children should LOOK UP TO AS ROLE MODELS, and Bey AIN’T ONE OF THEM!

MY sister, would you want your daughter to look up to those negroid fe-males on those fake reality shows? Would you want your daughter to look up to a hip shaker at a stripper club? Would you want your daughter, to get on tell-a-LIE-vision, pumping and grining, in front of the world because she had a big booty?

YOU KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THOSE QUESTIONS!!!

Bey and Jay, are not role models, and it’s ashame O’Drama and Michelle look up to these negroids. I bet my last dollar, they ain’t got ONE CD by these negroids, even before he became president.

This is a game, and he needs that money, so he can continue to run for the prez. Also, they want our children to THINK that being an ex-dope boy or rapper, or hip shaker is the ONLY way to make money. OBSERVE!

What’s wrong with a role model like Barbara Jordan, [who was a lawyer and a politician, that fought for Blacks. Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, or Fannie Lou Hamer, were also Freedom Fighters. These Black sisters FOUGHT for our freedom and civil rights. Sojourner Truth even, was invited to the Black House by Lincoln [she was responsible for our freedom], and Barbara Jordan was the FIRST woman to run for the presidency! THESE ARE ROLE MODELS!!!

YOU should be the role model for your daughter; not Bey!!!

To each his own. Stop the hate. She works in a progression which requires the showing of skin, and she has beautiful skin. She has not had any scandals so far.
Try, for goodness sake, to see the bright side of life. She makes life interesting to some of those who have dull lives.

No she is not a role model for the Presidents daughters nor anyone else’s. She represents the Quint-Essential persona of the Ghetto Hoochie Mama.
She has very little to no talent what so ever. She’s the product of a very skillful marketing campaign that marketed her Big Fat Rump. Not talent. Granted it’s been successful and she’s made a ton of money but that does not mean she’s a person of substance which she is not. I give the President a little slack here he’s just being politically correct. I’m sure he doesn’t want his daughters taking after this Hoochie.

I have no idea wwhat is wrong with the President’s
daughters admiring BEYONCE’. As I see I hear about Michele, the mother is very strict with them, that does not prove that they are going to become a role model because of their likeness toward BEYONCE’. I believe that in every aspect of their lives, they may have a better career in the future.

What a shame! What a shame! Have we confused what goes into being a role model? Is dressing skimpily, revealing flesh, gyrating, etc., what we want our young girls to emulate? This has gotten out of hand. Does everything have tbe for poliical reasons. I’m disappointed with the President for making such an empty statement. But I guess everything can be reduced to getting the vote. Money does talk! Shame, shame on you President Obama!

I suspect we don’t know the half of the shame the President has brought forth.

When it’s all said and done in November or 4 years from now, he will be looked at with a critical eye, not this love him right or wrong. we’ll say they are being racist, what we say about everything negative said about the President. History is backed up with fact.

He is a Chicago politician, and as such will say or due anything for a vote or approval, he is still full of himself “this is the time that seas retreat” etc etc

Knowing fully well that we the people will do what we want to do no matter what others say so with that said I for one am a siner save by grace I do believe in the Bible so, my opinion/statement is that, the Bible do condone her public display and I think a role model starts from within because, we all have (thoughts, ideals and suggestions and act on them by choice)and as long as we have our state of mind set on the things above and not on the things below then to me whomever is a role model in the sight of God to those who believe. Remember: Judge not lest ye be judged! Matthew 7.1 Peace, love and safety from the blessing above and that include Beyonce, YOU and I! God bless!

Jay z is pimping her for a buck, and she is prostituting herself for a buck. I wouldn’t want my daughter to marry a pimp, and I wouldn’t want her to prostitute herself. It’s all about the money. Just my 1st amendment opinion, not calling anyone names because I don’t know. What I do know is that sadly, people will do anything for money. (beg, borrow, steal, lie, cheat, kill including politicians up on Capitol Hill) . Hey that rhymes!

bad role model because you look at the whole picture and not just when the’re in their white house costumes. Her provactative videos and songs have no substance when living in a world that requires more than a spotlight.

This is the same girl that you would like to contribute her “dirty” money to save your sorry a***s for all and sundry reasons. This is the same girl who Harry Belafonte would like to take her money and use it for your benefit! There isn’t anything wrong with Beyonce. She is an Entertainer, paying her way. She isn’t doing drugs and tearing down America by clinging to the hem of her garment as a helpless dependent, so she is a good role model. Many of you do worse than lap dances, and don’t get anything for it. She is an entertainer; and that is what entertainers do….
