Right Wing Goes Crazy Over Imaginary ‘Obama Phone’, Which is Really a ‘Bush Phone’… Let Me Explain

In case you haven’t heard, the entire right wing establishment is in a tizzy over the comment of one black woman who said Obama has her vote because he gave her an ‘Obama phone.’ Right wing rag Drudge carried the non-story first, and because it played into the fictional narrative that Obama voters, blacks especially, are dependent on government help, it quickly went viral.

There’s only one problem with the story though; there’s no such thing as an ‘Obama phone.’

Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.
