Doroth Carter, a respected actress with a long and powerful career, has died at the age of 94. Carter starred in the Broadway adaptation of the novel “Strange Fruit” and also became an educator and author of children’s books. The esteemed performer died after fighting bladder cancer.
Carter, born in 1918 in Kissimee, Fla., studied drama at Spelman College and later was taught by Stella Adler in New York. She made her Broadway debut in 1945 in Lillian Smith’s adaptation of her novel “Strange Fruit,” an interracial love story.
