Oddly enough, I woke up this morning wondering about the enigma who calls himself “Toure.” No last name, just “Toure.” I normally wouldn’t be spending my time writing solely about another person, but out of respect for serious political analysts that white television networks tend to ignore, I had to discuss this issue out loud.
Toure of MSNBC is the man who has every intelligent black person in America wondering why he’s on TV, myself included. There are no credentials in his background which lead you to believe that he should be defining the direction of national thought on serious political issues (the bio I found says that he dropped out of Emory University in 1992). He also seems to say things for entertainment, rather than substantive, value and doesn’t seem to take his work all that seriously.
I’ve heard grumblings from political science experts who can’t get two seconds of airtime on national TV, and I feel bad for them. Usually, their concerns are expressed about men like Roland Martin, whose Masters Degree in Christian communications seems to make him a better fit for the 700 Club than CNN. But actually, I usually defend Martin, whose time as a journalist in the political hotbed of Washington DC gives him the background necessary to give opinions worth listening to. This doesn’t mean that many of our brilliant black political science professors, attorneys, or judges would not be better suited to speak on American politics (after all, their backgrounds in the field are quite extensive), but Roland at least takes his role (and himself) quite seriously.
Toure, on the other hand, offers the kind of empty insights that make you wonder what the 23-year old television producer was thinking when she booked him to discuss the intricacies of African American politics. The man who hunts for his next soundbite like a teenage girl trying to find the coolest Coach purse, doesn’t seem to know how to make his remarks without saying something that appears to be flat-out stupid. Some might even consider him to be a simple-minded clown.
Case-in-point: When Toure and I were on CNN debating Tyler Perry films, I thought we were there to have a productive dialogue about Perry’s work. I don’t watch most of Perry’s films, and some of it is certainly questionable, but I respect that Tyler is trying to connect to his audience in what he believes to be a helpful way. I also wanted to show some respect to the millions of people who watch Perry movies, many of them being intelligent, conscientious black people who just happen to think that Madea is funny.
Toure didn’t care to go beyond one syllable thinking on the matter, simply referring to Perry films as “Cinematic malt liquor for the masses.”
In addition to these “brilliant” remarks, Toure was also the man who got into a Twitter argument with Roland Martin and joked about Martin not being able to have any kids, which was a low and unnecessary blow. I admit that I wonder how Toure is aware of another man’s fertility status, and I also wonder what Roland’s ability to have kids has to do with the issue they were discussing at the time. In another interesting Toure highlight, there was the moment when he stated that Mitt Romney was trying to “niggerize” President Obama. Just a day later, Toure whimpered out the kind of pathetic apology that would only be uttered by a sad little man begging to keep his job.
I refer to Toure as the Kim Kardashian of social commentary because both Toure and Kim are the kinds of fascinating cartoon characters who are famous for d**n near nothing. His talent is that he is able to make white folks keep him propped up as a relevant black face when everything on his resume says that he’s disgustingly unqualified. He enters debates with brilliant and well-trained scholars like Michael Eric Dyson with nothing more to say than “I agree with what he just said.” Seeing Dyson debating with Toure is like watching Denzel Washington perform Shakespeare with Young Jeezy.
I also admit that it’s difficult to take someone seriously when they don’t even have a last name. The name “Toure” is the sort of name that would be connected to an entertainment-based, diva-like personality, like “Madonna” or “Prince.” It’s not the name that would be attached to a man responsible for serious socio-political commentary that shapes the way millions of people think and the way white people perceive an entire black community.
Toure started off as an entertainment writer, and perhaps that’s where he belongs. He should be writing about Soulja Boy’s new girlfriend or MC Hammer’s comeback album, and has little business commenting on the presidential election or matters that should be preserved for analysts who don’t use stage names. Thought leaders like Dr. Wilmer Leon, Professor Michael Fauntroy, Dr. Bryant Marks and MIT-educated Dr. Julianne Malveaux should be defining the direction of black America, not the modestly-educated guy who looks like he’s planning to drop an album.
Forgive me for stating the obvious when it comes to Toure, but networks need to respect black experts who know what the h**l they’re talking about, and not just chase after their favorite go-to negro who entertains them the most. Times and issues are too serious for this kind of buffoonery, and it’s time to call it for what it is.

There is always the tendency in the cultural milieu of beige america to take one individual from the Black community and use them as the outlet for plugging into power currents of Black Culture. If you have ever been in that spot there is a feedback that fries the connection. This happens because you cannot frame another’s culture in your own terms. Even a resident culture that is subliminally objectified by the inquisitors is a mystery that presents itself like a vortex that cannot be safely examined without being sucked in. The ultimate realization is the “We are no longer in Kansas Toto.” The truth can be a reality bending trip to those who are going blind and reaching for the shape and dimensions of the universe. Beige Culture is a culture that is blinded by it’s own hype and cannot see that it is stepping on many toes when it needs guidance to where it can function. You cannot make anyone see who is not willing to take their sleep mask off.

In response to Toure, being an on air commentator. He is as good as Anderson Cooper, or Erin Bernhart. What are you looking for, he has good opinion and he knows his material. Tell me one thing that S.B. Cooper, or the other three people on that show that gives you any more information than Toure. He is very sincere, and up front with his information, and Kim Kardashiasn, or what ever her name is, she is another Romney. Stop hating you people out there read more and listen more, what does Kimmy, b**t have to offer other than s******g everthing that has a zipper in the front and a swinging telepohone pole. Toure, is much better than anything on Faux news. Your only real good news people lefted is Ed Schult, an Rachel Maddax. CNN, rating are at the bottom of the pit. grow up and know ytour facts.

White guy here and i love this article. First, i want to say that, in principle, this would apply to white people just as well – it does us no good to have uneducated clowns “spitting” ridiculous, inflammatory rhetoric in areas where we go for real news.
That being said, this is just more proof that “the kids” are in charge at MSNBC and they’re less concerned with real news OR giving voice to positive black role models. You won’t find this talentless c**p on the other news outlets but MSNBC sends to think its ok or funny?
Think about it, black people, TOURE is MSNBC sees you. No respect. “Feed them a clown, they’ll love it.”

In our struggle for equality, self determination, respect and upward mobility. We need to hear from all types of voices. The real question is, when are we going to challenge the licenses of those who lease the public’s airwaves? As well as hold the advertisers accountable that support these entities, in their discriminatory practices.

Where do I start? Ok let’s start here, You my friend are obsessed with Toure!! Who wakes up thinking about Toure, or anyone that isn’t in their life on a daily basis. You spewed so much hate in this article that I missed the point as to why you’re bothered, so I re-read it. After re-reading, you have no point! Those politicians that can’t seem to get on tv, need to work on their Public Relations. If you’re mad at Toure, then be mad at Anderson Cooper who never went to school for journalism but is a credible journalist, be mad at Gayle Oprah’s friend who has a show because she’s Oprah’s friend, I mean h**l I can name quite a few people you can be bothered by who have positions in industries they did no studies for. Now, from my understanding Toure has been in the media as long as I can remember, and his position on politics is just as valid as the next persons. That’s all politics is full of, opinions, ideas, and rhetoric! If this is the case then Toure fits right in! Do yourself a favor, the next time you have time to write a piece like this, make it a positive piece and lend some credibility to yourself, because you lost me here. I don’t even know who you are!

I get the point you’re making but just wanted to point out that Gayle is pretty qualified to have a show and not just because she’s Oprah’s friend. I think her experience and background is always looked over because she’s Oprah’s friend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayle_King

Well if you dislike Toure, than you should dislike our president. I agree with you in saying that Toure is not qualified to be giving his opinion on social political issues. With saying that I also believe that our current president is not qualified to be a US president. He’s done nothing but destroy our global US reputation as “weak and soft” and destroyed our economy. And please don’t bring up the whole Bush argument. He had 4 years to make at least an impact, instead he made it worst. The only reason why he’s going to win this year’s election is because Romney is no better. America needs a better leader and Obama is not the answer. 4 more years of this will crush the US and we’ll see how happy we will be when all is lost. So to sum it up base on your article, Toure is not just like Kim Khardasian, but he’s like president Obama. A guy who became president because he’s black.

Datdudejones: Well, I thought that I’ve heard stupid, irrational comments before, but you have just proved me wrong. Obama, has destroyed more of our enemies, than any President in the last 70 years, including Osama Bin Laden, but you accuse him of being weak. What do you want him to do, start more useless wars? As for the economy, when Obama took office, we were losing 700, 000 jobs a month. So first Obama, had to stop this job loss, and then he had to find a way to reverse this trend, and get companies to start hiring people. Yes, he has been in office for nearly 4 years, but it took Roosevelt over 8 years to get the economy rolling again, and he only achieved this, because of World War 2. So before you make these ridiculous statements, I suggest that you take a Civics, or history class, because you don’t know what the f**k you are talking about.

Although I sometimes do not agree with Toure he definitely understands the medium. Television is not a classroom, you do have to boil down your statements to get your point across to a wider audience. “Cinematic malt liquor for the masses” is a great statement because you immediately get it. As much as I respect Michael Eric Dyson, sometimes when I watch him on TV he’s talking waaayyy to fast and professorial– people stop listening immediately. So Dr. Watkins- don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Dr. Watkins has strong opinions. I tend to agree with him when he’s defending Dr. West’s and Tavis Smiley’s calling out Pres. Obama for Obama’s lack of attention to Black issues and on many other issues. But, a lot of what he says/writes is simply bullshit.Dr. Watkins DOES seeem to dislike Blacks who have jobs on cable television. He routinely puts down Rev. Al Sharpton, Melissa Harris-Perry,Pres. Obama,(he’s on T.V. a lot)and now Toure’? I do believe that Dr. Watkins is jealous of these people. He often speaks/writes in a condescending tone when referring to people who do not have PHD’S. Toure is intelligent, articulate, and has opinions about things. Dr. Watkins should not trash other black people simply because he disagrees with them.

The name “Toure” is the sort of name that would be connected to an entertainment-based, diva-like personality, like “Madonna” or “Prince.” — Doc
Toure is a traditional, and very honorable name in West Afrika. The legendary Samory Toure militarily defended his homeland against the French. Samory’s grandson, Ahmed Sekou Toure led Guinea to independence and became its first president. Our Esteemed Ancestor, the revolutionary Stokely Carmichael changed his name to Kwame Ture to honor Kwame Nkrumah and Sekou Toure.
In America sociopolitical commentary is more about entertainment than critical thinking. Karl Marx said, “Religion is the opiate of the masses.” Entertainment is the opiate of the masses in America.
Not that it really matters, but the most successful person in the “commentary industry,” Rush Limbaugh, has no academic credentials. Sharpton has a last name. Does that make him a credible journalist?
Thought leaders will never be featured in the MSM, because American politics is the science of deception; the antithesis of ethics, and a cesspool of prostitution. The MSM plays a vital role in this process.
Fascism is the merger of big business with the State and there is no better example of this than America’s mainstream media. They operate on the propagandistic principles of Paul Joseph Goebbels: “It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
The abundance of empty heads in the MSM play a critical role in stifling dissent. That’s why we have alternative media. We better use it to our advantage before it is shut down.

The problem is that both Watkins and Toure are inappropriate as representatives of the Black Community. They are both narcissists. They are only concerned about themselves and opportunistically use the Black Community to serve their purpose. Even the names he gave as intelligent representatives are opportunistically implausible for what we as a people are experiencing in a white supremacist nation. I really don’t understand the value system operating among such persons as Toure, Watkins, Sharpton, Jackson, etc. It is highly Eurocentric — individualist, materialist, competitive, etc. We need to clean house and uplift everyday folks and leaders who fear God for real…..

Yep. In a prison, it is illogical to trust a cellmate. When the guards show up with their torture kit ready to extract healthy teeth without anesthesia from you and your dear ones OR to give you a year’s supply of fresh produce and quality dental care—-except in the very rare instance, you know how it’s going down. I was once made an “offer.” I didn’t take it. But, I’m not so arrogant to say there is nothing that wouldn’t scare me enough to buckle. Nor am I arrogant enough to publicly say what I think my buckling point might be. PRISONS MANUFACTURE SELL-OUTS. Let’s replace the global open-air prison of white supremacy with one of justice.

Exactly what has this black man done, to deserve your hateful, and tasteless critique, could it be that he acquired a prominent job on TV, while you have not been able to find employment for yourself? Please, tell us one d**n thing this black brother has done to disgrace black people? I watch his show daily, and this man supports and defends our people’s interests, and has never done anything demeaning, or disrespectful toward us. Watkins makes some good points…the question I have for “bona fides” and “credentialed” brothas is…What is stopping them from speaking out? Publishing a book is as easy as ever. Owning one’s own blog and vlog channel is easy as ever (as evidenced here). The production of that voice…as easy as ever.
The answer is that as soon as someone attains position, they begin the life-long process of protecting it. Why lament bona fides not being on MSNBC when, if used correctly, it’s Social Media that has more power these days and MSNBC that’s fighting for position. “Matthews” pulls in a top 1.1 mill rating now in this election season. The same with Maddow. But we have all year to push, comment, connect and distribute ideas. Why not put together a Ustream broadcast of a big headed round table once a week? NASA used Ustream for Curiosity’s Mars landing and we can’t scramble a decent Intel-Cast? To me most Black promoters on Facebook have more hustle than political intellectuals waiting for the invitation to be a “made man” by traditional outlets. If Toure ain’t the guide then burn your own path. #mytwocents.

I am disappointed by this article by Dr. Boyce Watkins. I was not expecting to read such an article, that is giving me a different nature of the person that I admired till I read this. Is this a social analysis or a personal one? If Toure was not doing well, why wasting so much energy and negativity on him? What is the issue here? Is there any crime to be Toure and to entertaining people on MSNBC on his one way? Do we all need to be from a certain educational background to give our opinion on national TV? What is wrong with someone calling himself “Toure”? He (Dr. BOYCE WATKINS) is making Toure looks big by writing some non sense about him. This is far too low for someone wanting to be a serious commentator on national TV himself. Too judgemental and personal=subjective.

Wow Boyce, are you that upset for not having a TV gig that the only thing you could do was lash out at Toure?
Why are you angry with Toure for having a job on MSNBC? Just like a crab a*s Negro, attack the brother instead of the white producer who controls the hiring.
I found it interesting when you said, the 23-year old television producer, WHY NOT MENTION HER NAME? If someone is at fault, your attack should have been aimed at the white executives who control the hiring.
Oh..my bad, because if you ever criticized the white executives by name for hiring the black people (who have the TV jobs that you jealously desire), THEN YOU WOULD NEVER GET A JOB ON TV. So take your frustations out on Toure, Sharpton, Harris-Perry and Dyson. We do notice you never criticize anyone on CNN due to your occasional appearence.
Wake up Boyce, white folks don’t need another ESPN Michael Wilburn looking a*s Negro like you on TV. In addition, you have attacked every black person working on TV, (excluding Roland) therefore you have no friends and will never get a TV job. Bill Mayer would have been the perfect format for you, but your dumb a*s messed that up too. Work on your communication skills brother. lol
So please let it rest and stop trying to pit us against one another with this Toure c**p when we should be fighting the man instead of ourselves.

He is not qualified to even clean the floors of one of these studios, let alone be one of the host. I watch Toure every day, and I find his commentaries to be astute, honest, intelligent, and very well founded. He also speaks up and defend our people’s interests. The black people that find fault with him are just mad, that he is not a race hustler, like this scum Boyce, who wouldn’t even have a job at Syracuse, were it not their fear of firing him, because he would cry racism. I am not surprised that Boyce is trashing, and hating on this brother, because he did the same thing to Rev. Al Sharpton, when he was first mentioned as a candidate for his job on MNBC, and he did the same thing to Melissa Harris Perry. If Toure, is unqualified, then so is Tavis Smiley. What I am surprised about, is all of these other stupid a*s commenters, that is following his lead, and hating on one of our own, just because he is not ghetto enough for their taste. Well Toure, is an intelligent, astute, and well educated brother, that represents us very well, but I guess some of you don’t like him because he doesn’t blame whitey enough for your taste. If you continue to follow this loser Boyce,by denigrating, and hating those of us that want better things for our people, twenty years from now, you’ll be just as bitter, and hateful as this dumb a*s Boyce guy, and still won’t have s**t.

There is very little different from the entertainment media and the news media today. I remember when CNN hired D L Hugley to host his own show on their news network. MSNBC overlooking credible black journalist to hire Al Sharpton is another example of hiring unqualified black people.
The black buffoon has always been popular and financially lucrative for the entertainment industry. The white news media is simply catching on to this fact. IMO mainstream white media has no credibility when concerning black people so I don’t care who they hire. I try to get my news information from different sources other than TV. We as black people need to spend our energy starting our own news networks and stop expecting fair treatment from whites.

But to assume that he (Boyce) or the erratic Malveaux or any of these other so-called negro thought leaders are qualified to “define the direction of black America” is CRAZY. That would be like the blind leading the blind; like going to an insane asylum and asking a patient for guidance.
No one should define anyone else’s life. All you talking heads need to chill.

MG@ We as a people find it hard to uplift our own. It comes from way back. It is equally hard for us to appreciate the successes of other blacks without tearing them down. There are thousands of unqualified whites on television, radio, political office, etc. etc., but will whites tear down theirs like we are willing to do? No.
Let me tell you story to make my point: A white woman always spoke of how any white woman who came up to the counter at work was pretty. A particularly ‘plain’ white woman came to the county one day and my friend asked her co-worker if she was pretty. She answered, “she’s got pretty hands”.
I do hope you get the story.
Toure’ is not a spoke person for blacks and we shouldn’t expect him to be a spokesperson for blacks-he has a white wife some of his blackness is invested in that. Besides they are not going to pick another black they have Sharpton. in our history there has only been one Lena Horne or one black in anything. MSNBC has done an outstanding jobs of introducing conscious and unconscious blacks on their programs., especially, in these times. They will do better.
If we had a comment to make like Boyce, he should have and we should write MSNBC. But getting on here putting ideas in our malleable heads is a bit much.
