American Idol is working to build its portfolio of megastars for its hit show. This week, the show announced that hip hop superstar Nicki Minaj is joining the cast as one of the judges. Minaj is joining Keith Urban, along with Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson, for what some expect to be a very interesting season.
The panel is designed to be able to cover all of the different styles of music that might appear on Idol and the show comes out in January of next year. Urban is probably the least well-known of the group, but is highly accomplished. He has won a Grammy award and just released his sixth studio album. His last album, “Defying Gravity,” went platinum. He is also married to actress Nicole Kidman, giving him plenty of star power in his own home.
“Nicki’s an unbelievably captivating international phenomenon who has made an indelible mark on rap and pop. And Keith is another great addition to Idol — he’s one of the biggest stars in country music,” said Mike Darnell, Fox’s head of reality programming.
The new judges replace Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. The show continues to try new panels after sticking with the same panel for the first eight seasons.
