On Thursday night, the Oakland school board unanimously agreed to enter an agreement with the Office for Civil Rights to take measures that will stop African-American students from being suspended.
Parents and members of the district and community joined other leaders in speaking out about the need to implement a plan that will change the future of African American students. The plan is to include the input of students, families and teachers.
Chris Chatmon, director of the district’s African American Male Achievement initiative, said,
“We’re here today to ante up and reclaim our children.”
