Study Shows that Marriage Significantly Reduces Child Poverty

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, released a study showing that marriage reduces the chances that a child will grow up in poverty.  They claim that the chances of a child being in poverty drop by 82 percent if the child’s parents are married.

“If you look nationwide, in a given year about 37 percent of the single-parent families with children are poor,” says the group spokesman, Robert Rector. “By contrast, of the married two-parent families, only 7 percent of them are poor. And you know what? That reduction occurs even if you make a comparison between parents at the same education level.”
