It appears that black television works very well, especially the positive stuff. While some speculate that the show will probably never get the kind of audience we might see on “Basketball Wives,” “Steel Magnolias” has been a hit for Lifetime. The show is a remake of the 1989 classic with an all-black cast. The show pulled in a super impressive 6.5 million total viewers during it’s premiere, according to Nielson.
The show was number three on Lifetime’s most watched shows list. It’s also the best turnout the network has had since the 2006 telecast of a film about the star of “American Idol,” Fantasia Barrino. The cast consists of an extraordinary group of respected black actresses, including Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard, Jill Scott and Phylicia Rashad.
The show also produced far more young viewers than any show in Lifetime’s recent history. Over 2.5 million viewers between the ages of 25 and 54 watched the show.
Maybe we are getting into a new age of cinema where black women can behave like normal and positive human beings and still draw a nice audience. That could be the wave of the future.
