A Georgia man is going to prison for beating his son to death. Sadly, the man allegedly felt that the bible made him do it. Benjamin Edetanlen was given 18 years in prison this week for the beating of his five month old son. The man said that his beatings were in strict adherence to Proverbs: 13, which teaches that if you spare the rod, you spoil the child.
But authorities say that the father pushed his son too far when he killed him in 2004.
Assistant District Attorney Dalia Racine says that the man beat all of his kids, including his five month old son, one year old son and two year old daughter.
“The defendant stated that he disciplined the children, according to the book of Proverbs in the Bible,” Racine said.
The baby died from blunt force trauma, suffering both brain injuries and a broken leg. But despite the tragedy, the man’s attorneys claim that the father loves his kids.
“Mr. Edetanlen firmly believed in the adage, you know, spare the rod and spoil the child,” defense attorney Ingrid McGaughey said.
The father is going to be sent to prison for 18 years and the other kids aren’t going to have their father. It’s hard to argue if counseling might have been better than prison for him, since the fates of his other kids are uncertain at this point. The father is also not allowed to see his kids once he gets out of prison.
The two living children may lose both of their parents, since the mother is facing charges for not stopping the abuse. Is there a better way to deal with this problem than incarceration and making these children into orphans?

They should execute the mother, the father, and the piece of dog excrement that wrote this article. Man made religion, not some mystical god. They should institutionalize everyone that believes in this garbage, and ban it from being practiced. This was murder, plain murder.

The kids don’t need their parents!!! I assure you!!! But I am sure there is someone out there who can care for these kids with the love and hope they deserve! There must be someone in that family who are able to give these kids a life! Govt need to ensure there are strict guidelines in place, and on going monitoring of the kids through out their childhood and adolescent years…. Why is this not happening? I wish I could have them and cherish them and give them what they deserve…. But it is best if they have family who can do this for them…. If not? I’d love to care for them…. I don’t live in the US, but gosh it is so sad to learn this tragedy…. Best wishes to the kids of this tragedy…. Take care

Excuses Excuses Excuses Hang Him. Beat him like he did his 5 month old son. Enough if enough he beat the children because he has problems and he should not be allowed to walk the earth again. As far as the mother goes beat her to because she is just as sick as him.

Folks there is a subset in the evangelical churches who follow the “To Train Up A Child” and they absolutely advocate starting punishing infants to “break them” of “selfish” things like crying when hungry, grabbing your eyeglasses off your face, etc.” http://www.morethanalive.com/pages/chapter-one-to-train See the sections on “Never Too Young To Train.” Books like this legitimize the kind of thinking that father had about the proverbial injunction “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” They take it so literally that there is nothing to filter and mediate the message. Of course he killed the baby … I’m just surprised his attorney didn’t use a First Amendment, freedom of religion argument to defend him however grateful I am that he didn’t go there so this jerk gets to spend some time in prison. Amazingly there is an interesting contrast with an Hispanic mother, who glued her daughter’s hands to the wall and whooped on her who got 99 years in prison. This guy got lucky!

So what had he taught these children about discipline before having to resort to beatings then a subsequent homicide? Seems like he took his mounting ‘grownup’ problems out on his kids.

This mentally ill jackass gets no sympathy from me, he needs to be put up for life and so does his dumb wife! There is no way I am going to allow a man, father or not, beat my child to death! Absolutely nothing p****s me off more than for a man or woman to abuse an innoncent child. A 5 month old child???? Maybe they will beat him to death in prison. He believes in the Bible, eye for an eye! Did he read that part?

WOW! I think he needs mental health counseling, It clearly shows that he is sick and he did a horrible thing to his own baby. He should spend life in prison after counseling for taking a childs life..The other kids need to be placed in a foster home so they are safe.
