You might love what you do, but you may not love it all the time, all day long. There are ways that you can do your job without allowing it to burn you down into the ground. Protecting your emotional core is critical to professional success, so it’s important that you treat yourself well as you engage in your professional journey.
There are a few things you can do to avoid hating your job:
1) Try to have regular breaks: A nap is always great if you can get one. But if you can’t get a nap, just take a mental break and think about something else for a while. Switch tasks on a regular basis so that the old task seems fresh when you come back to it.
2) Try not to work when you are uncomfortable: Get plenty of sleep, go to the bathroom when necessary and make sure you’ve got something in your stomach. If you don’t feel well, you’ll dislike what you’re doing that much more.
3) Be well-rounded: This is especially true when it comes to family. If you’re spending all of your time at the office at the expense of your kids, then you and your kids both lose. Also, work should be a part of your life, not your entire life. It is possible to be both a workaholic and dad of the year, as long as you are equally-intense about both endeavors.
4) Make your vacation a firm priority: The easiest thing for a busy person to do is to find an excuse not to take the vacation you were planning. BAD MOVE. You should respect the appointments you make with yourself as much as you respect appointments made on the job. Balance is critical to avoiding an empty life.
Keep these ideas in mind as you head out and conquer the world. You’ve got to be healthy and happy while you do it.
