Detroit Mayor Says Workers Think They are “Entitled” to a Job

In an interview with CNN, Detroit Mayor Bing sounded more like a Republican than a Democrat when discussing  his cash strapped city. Bing’s comments were directed at city workers, who he feels have unreal expectations.

“We are in an environment, I think, of entitlement, we’ve got a lot of people who are city workers, who for years and years, 20, 30 years, think they are entitled to a job and all that comes with it,” Bing said.

He then added, “Nobody wants to go backwards, but in order for us to move this city forward we’re going to have to take a step or two backwards — and then, I think, all of us have to participate in the pain that’ s upon us right now.”

I think Mr. Bing’s statemeent was taken out of content. Detroit has less than 1 million residents but employee levels from the “glory days” of 1.5 million residents. The fight is to “right size” employees with current city population. Any attempt to do this is met with strong resistance from employees AND from the dysfunctional city council. There is no tax base to support the current employment levels.
