New Hampshire store owner Sarah Hamilton-Parker says she’s put up with Salvation Army workers ringing that bell for years, and she’s sick of it.
The store owner explained her frustration, saying that over the past four years she’s been forced to listen to the ringing of the bells during Christmas season for 8 hours a day.
“I listen to this for 200 hours a year,” Hamilton-Parker told the Portsmouth Herald. “This is my fourth year and I can’t take it anymore. I’m so sick of it.”
Adding, “It makes me hate Christmas.”
At first the store owner tried to drown out the sound of the bells, then she put in ear plugs, but nothing worked, and that’s when she turned to the authorities for help.
Police Capt. Mike Schwartz said that there’s nothing he can do to help.
“I recognize her concern, but it’s something the city has given permission for,” he said. “They don’t even let me pick out my own clothes, so I don’t have a say in it. But you do have a voice in city government. These are not back-room decisions.”
The Salvation Army refuses to move further away from Hamilton Parker’s store because the organization says the location is good for raising money.
