Rapper Drake Wants Walgreens and Macy’s To Pay What They Owe

drakeSo Drake wants to sue Walgreens? Really?  It’s alleged that Walgreens is using a motto that the rapper helped to make popular in one of his rap songs. Drake used the phrase on his so song, “The Motto” from his hit album, Take Care. But here is the problem.

Drake cannot stop Walgreens from using the slogan for merchandising, as he never trademarked it. Without a trademark for the YOLO (You Only Live Once) phrase, it is free game. In fact there are over 100 U.S. Trademark applications pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office already, so it could take years for him to be able to claim rights to the slogan. Drake posted pics of merchandise, that he took at a Walgreens store on Christmas Eve.

Under one of them, he wrote, “Walgreens … you gotta either chill or c*t the cheque.” He also said the same thing goes for Macy’s who has a t-shirt with Charlie Brown and Snoopy on it and the “YOLO” slogan. Drake has not officially said that he is taking legal action against Walgreens or Macy’s. Lesson learned. As an artist and brand, he may want to consider trademarking his name as soon as possible, before someone claims rights to that.
