Jay-Z and old school rapper Ma$e actually had beef back in the day. Early in Jay-Z’s career, the two fought over a girl. In an interview with MTV’s RapFix Live, Ma$e says that they fought over a girl named Arion ,who happened to be a part of Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella camp. If you were a fan of Ma$e, back in the day, you may remember a skit on his 1997 album, Harlem World, where he mixes up the name of two girls, in a phone conversation. One of those names being Arion.
Ma$e says that the beef between the two was a short lived thing. “I guess Jay inherited it because me and him never really had a problem,” “He said something, I said something back and that was about it.” The kicker is that Arion had a boyfriend within the Roc-A-Fella camp. So that could not have gone over well for a then young Jay-Z, when dealing with execs at Roc-A-Fella. Jay’s response to the whole thing can be found on “ Ride or Die” from his 1998 LP Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life. The line, “You see the respect I get every time I come through/ Check ya own videos you’ll always be #2,” refers to Ma$e being Diddy’s sidekick back in the day.
Since then the two have moved on from mindless beefs, with Jay-Z being larger than life, with one of the baddest females on his arm and Ma$e getting married, going into ministry, and now trying to make his way back into the rap game.
