Denzel Washington Returns to Broadway for “A Raisin In The Sun”

Actor Denzel Washington is slated to play Lee Younger in "A Raisin In The Sun" revival.

.

Heartthrob actor Denzel Washington is returning to broadway! His successful performance in “Fences” two years ago landed him a Tony award. Now, he’s back at it again with an upcoming role in the Lorraine Hansberry revived classic “A Raisin In The Sun,” which was first produced on Broadway in 1959.

No one knows specific details about the upcoming production, aside from its slated 2014 debut. Michael Riedel, writer for New York Post, said he spoke with Whoopi Goldberg about the revival and she expressed serious interest playing the part of Lena Walter’s mother. “I know that lady,” she told Riedel. “I love that lady.” Washington is slated to play Walter Lee Younger, a limousine driver whose hopes and dreams of being famous in America are stifled by the Chicago ghetto. The character is in his 30′s, which means Washington will be playing the role of a character that is nearly half his age! (In 2014, the actor will be 60.)

Washington’s first debut on broadway was in “Checkmates,” where he is said to have had a lackluster performance. Riedel said he was surprised the actor didn’t want to revive his role in the play.  ”I can’t believe Washington didn’t want to come back in a revival of “Checkmates,” his first Broadway play. I saw it, and boy, was it a doozy!” Although Riedel would love to see Washington revive “Checkmates,” he’s looking forward to seeing him in “A Raisin In The Sun.”

A Raisin in the Sun” is a wonderful play — wise, warm and often very funny. “Checkmates” notwithstanding, Washington usually appears in pretty intense shows — “Fences,” “Richard III,” “Julius Caesar.” So it will be nice to see him getting some laughs in “Raisin” as a man who doesn’t really grow up until he learns a few things from the smart women around him,” Riedel said in a New York Post  article.
