New HIV Infections Among African-American Women Decrease, Increase Among Gay Men

Over the past decade, there has been a lot of disturbing news about the number of HIV infections in African American women. Now, hiv-aids-630however, there may be a bit of good news on the horizon.

Chicago Sun Times reports:

For the first time, the number of new HIV infections among African-American women has declined, but young gay men saw an increase, a report Wednesday released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

The 2010 data was published online in the CDC’s HIV Supplemental Surveillance Report, which provides the most up-to-date picture of HIV rates in the United States.

You will recall that in July of this year, NPR reported that nearly half of all African Americans are infected with HIV:

Of the more than 1 million people in the U.S. infected with HIV, nearly half are black men, women and children — even though blacks make up about 13 percent of the population. AIDS is the primary killer of African-Americans ages 19 to 44, and the mortality rate is 10 times higher for black Americans than for whites.

So any good news as it relates to the rate of infection of African-America women is good news, and a move in the right direction. As of late, there has also been a push in the black church to encourage black men and women to get tested and take control of their health, and it is possible that this latest downtick in the rate of infection among African American women is a  result of that effort as well. There is, obviously,  still work to be done to stem the rate of infection among gay men.

African-Americans are only 12% of the population per the 2000 census, it may be higher now. More than 12% of the population have an STD, AIDS or HIV. It is so wrong for people to give out incorrect facts about women of color. I have never believed that so many women of color were infected, we are always the ugliest, most infected of any group…sounds a lot like racism to me. Because of all of these negatives the African-American race is divided and looked down upon by all. This has to stop now!
