In case you were otherwise disposed last night, you know that Sunday night football was preempted when President Obama spoke at the Newton Memorial for the Sandy Hook victims. President spoke as a way of beginning the healing after one of the worst tragedies in American history, but obviously, some folks were more interested in watching football than listening to anything President Obama had to say, and blasted Obama on Twitter.
Deadspin captured the following tweets:
No one should be surprised considering social media has shown us the worst of people more than a few times in the past, most notably in musings about the movie Hunger Games, where racists were livid to learn that one of the main characters, Rue, was black (even though the book plainly describes her as dark skin.)
Racists aside, President Obama delivered a moving speech, saying that we can’t continue to accept these kinds of tragedies.
“In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens—from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators—in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this,” Obama said.
“We can’t tolerate this anymore,” Obama said. “These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change.”
