Newark Mayor Cory Booker has not only lived in the ghetto, rescued a woman from a house fire, and lived off food stamps for a week, but he’s also seen someone get shot, at least according to him. And Booker says having witnessed someone get shot is part of the reason why he’s in favor of stemming gun violence.
On Sunday’s episode of This Week, Booker became annoyed with the panelists, saying “Most of us in America, including gun owners, agree on things that would stop the carnage.”
Booker then described what he feels is the reason people are engaging in a “false” gun control debate; because they haven’t any personal experience with gun violence.
“I don’t know if anybody here has had to put their hand in someone’s chest and stop the bleeding. I have” said Booker.
Booker called the current gun debate a “convenient trick to try to divide our country more.” He added that 74 percent of NRA members “agree that nobody in America should be able to buy a gun without doing a background check.”
Booker’s point is that he doesn’t believe Americans are all that divided on guns, and that the media and other vested stakeholders are largely fabricating a debate which doesn’t exist. Booker then called on the panel to “stop this false debate.”
He then argued that there are current problems which should be corrected, such as “secondary markets” for guns.
