Meet The Press: No Pro-Gun Senators Were Willing to Come on TV

There are times when you know that you’ve screwed up and everyone else does too.  This might be one of those weeks where the gun lobby has to admit that maybe the cards are not in their favor.   Almost no one can defend a horrible crime against children, especially one that is similar to what happened in Connecticut this week.

David Gregory, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said that while the situation at Sandy Hook Elementary was certainly the hot topic of the day, he couldn’t get a single pro-gun Senator to make an appearance on the show.  This says a lot from a lobby that tends to push hard to defend its point of view.

“We reached out to all 31 pro-gun rights senators in the new Congress to invite them on the program to share their views on the subject this morning,” he said. “We had no takers.”

During the show, Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, says that she plans to introduce a bill banning assault weapons.  The bill is set to be brought into Congress in January.  Others, such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, are calling on President Obama to speak up on the matter with Congress and demand what he needs Congress to do.

Not only did the pro-gun Senators avoid “Meet the Press,” they also avoided “Face the Nation” on CBS.   It looks like they aren’t willing to face anyone as they continue to count their money behind closed doors.

“Face the Nation” invited on politicians who oppose gun control, including representatives from the NRA, but they declined the program’s requests.

The only person with the courage to speak out was Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas).  Appearing on Fox News (are you surprised?) Gohmert said that the answer to violence in schools is to simply give everyone a gun and let them shoot it out at will.

“I wish to god she had had an M4 in her office,” he said, referring to Sandy Hook Elementary School principal Dawn Hochsprung.

Could more guns be the solution, or would it make it easier for the next killer to simply get access to one?  After all, Adam Lanza (the killer at Sandy Hook) received all of his guns legally.
