Leonardo DiCaprio plays the notorious Calvin Candie, in the upcoming film, Django Unchained. Although he loves being an actor, this is the most difficult role he has had to play in his career, to date. The Catch Me If You Can actor says, “This was really my first attempt in playing a character I had this much disdain and this much hatred for.”
Even with having the support of his fellow cast mates, Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson, DiCaprio still had a hard time adjusting. “It was an incredibly uncomfortable environment to walk into,” DiCaprio said of his character’s sadistic behavior. “I’ve dealt with and seen racism in my surroundings in my life growing up, but to the degree that I had to treat other people in this film was incredibly disturbing.”
DiCaprio’s character, Candie, is the owner of a notorious slave plantation in Mississippi. Django (Jamie Foxx) is a freed slave that comes back to get his wife, Broomhilda(Kerry Washington) from Candie. Django Unchained has faced a great deal of opposition lately, but is already creating Oscar buzz. The Quentin Tarantino film is set to open on Christmas Day.
