The Supreme Court has decided to hear positions on both sides of the emotional and divisive gay marriage debate. Oppossers of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the California Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage will have their positions heard by the High Court in March 2013, according to USA Today.
Some of the main questions the Supreme Court will have to answer in its ruling on this issue are: Is it possible for states to ban gay marriage? Does the Constititution protect the right to marry for all couples, including gays and lesbians?
The Supreme Court will also have to decide whether or not gay and lesbian couples can be denied the same federal benefits that opposite-s*x couples receive.
