Another racial barrier has been broken in the southern state of South Carolina. Representative Tim Scott, (R) will become the first ever black GOP member appointed to the U.S. Senate from a southern state. Rep. Scott was appointed by South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. His predecessor, Jim DeMint is stepping down from his position in the U.S. Senate to become president of The Heritage Foundation. DeMint released a statement Monday supporting his successor.
