Tina Turner Reportedly Giving Up U.S. Passport to Become Swiss

According to the Swiss media, Tina Turner, who has been living in Switzerland since 1995, will give up her U.S. passport in exchangetina turner for Swiss citizenship.

“I’m very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here. … I cannot imagine a better place to live,” Turner told German language newspaper Blick.

International Magazine France24 reports:

Turner, 73, who was born Anna Mae Bullock, lives in picturesque town of Kuesnacht, on the shores of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland, and has passed a local civics test and interview, according to an official announcement published in the Zuerichsee-Zeitung daily.

The woman behind such hits as “Private Dancer”, “Simply the Best” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” will still need a green light from the canton of Zurich as well was federal authorities before she can receive red passport, the two papers reported.

Tina Turner’s spokeswoman, Karin Rhomberg, confirmed that Turner will become a Swiss citizen.

“Tina Turner will therefore also give back her US citizenship,” she said.

Turner reportedly moved to Switzerland in 1995 when her longtime beau, German record executive Erwin Bach, was transferred there.

What do you think of Tina Turners decision? Does it make sense, especially considering how long she’s been living in Switzerland? Or would you have preferred her to maintain her American citizenship? Have you ever considered becoming an expat,  and saying goodbye to America?

It is her choice of what she wanted to do. She seems happy and I wish well. Hopefully she will remember she is STILL a US born citizen no matter what.

On dual citizenship. Why can’t she become a citizen of Switzerland and retain her US citizenship? American double nationals exist especially in Israel where many have both Israeli and USA citizenship.

I wish some of you’ll would read the comments, which was supposted to be about Tina Turner, and read the HATE.She and anyone should be able to live anywhere they want, without the comments of others that really don’t count. People stay out of other people’s business and keep your BS hate to yourself..

Tina is Tina, a lady, a woman and an extraordinary human. She should do what ever she desires. I have travelled, and still find America modernly pleasant. However, I too plan to live part-time in the carribean islands and part-time in America — until I decide to choose. There is very little racism against black people overall in any country I have travelled – America is racist to the bone. Just listening to Congress, to neighbors, they will never relate are treat matters concerning people of color equal. Wherever you are at peace, wherever you are happy is home.

I have been all over the world, love this country, but the people are backwards and behind in human evolution. Also for people who study the constitution. The 14th amendment issued that we would never be citizens. They can call us what they want because we are classified as property.Blacks.negro,afro-american are social constructs that help label us as property and made in the USA and no where else on earth.Check it out
before you criticize. 13th and 14th amendment. We would not need them if we were truly American citizens

The important thing is the “Dream,” and the opportunity to live that “Dream”
Would she have been so successful and prominent
if she had grown up in Switzerland?
Has she checked the racial hate ratio of the ordinary black person in that country?
A dual citizenship was the best but if she choses just a country, then good luck.

I’m a white woman and Tina has been my idol for 40+ years. She has always said that European audiences were always more supportive of her throughout the years and that she connected with them more than in the U.S. I am happy for her but think that it is quite sad that this country (U.S.) is chasing stars and businesses out of here due to taxes and all the other crazyness thats going on. I also highly disagree with a previous poster who basically stated that Tina has “issues” because she has “white peoples hair” weaved in! So, I guess that Beyonce, Mary J.,Nikki, Braxton, and a whole host of other women of color have “issues” also. Why is their choice of doing something different with their look denying their culture? Don’t white women perm their hair and love to get a deep dark rich tan? Are they denying being white? Mister, don’t be a hater. Tina has given the world many years and now it is time for her to enjoy. I wish her much love and happiness.

Those other bw are wearing wigs as part of their entertainment gigs. Its one thing when a bw wears a wig for style or cosmetic purposes, but Tina has sewn white hair into her scalp, like a doll and killed the black hair roots from growing, now that says alot more of how she sees her self being black, despite her successful music career. You are white all you see is Tina Turner the entertainer, what most whites look at, when it comes to blacks in music, sports, acting, etc. They rarely see the black person and how they really think about themselves.Whitney Houston had everything going for her,she was another bw in conflict with herself. When she died everybody talked more about her singing ability, than about her.Just saying…

        February 14, 2013 at 4:07 pm

Brotherscoe, I hear what you are saying, but why should it matter to anyone (black or white) what Tina really thinks about herself or how she sees herself? We are not apart of her personal life. Her “conflicts” do not interfere or negate her wonderful talent. If what you say is true about her sewn hair (I always heard she wore wigs) maybe she just chooses to identify more with her european heritage than her black roots. Why is her hair such an issue to you? This post is about her claiming residency in Switzerland not about her “conflicts”. But, while on the subject, you make it sound like all WP see nothing in BP but their entertainment capabilities. You are SOoooo off base. Alot of WP I know felt that it was beyond tragic that Whitney Houston got “lost” somewhere and her life ended as it did. With all due respect, brotherscoe, I think you need to meet some different WP. Sounds like you have more bias than all the WP I know. “Let’s Stay Together” :)

If I had enough to live on wthout seeking employment I would move to Canada. During slavery Canada refused to allow bounty hunters to come into their country to retrieve runaway slaves. Now they have a government program which is aiding Africans to join a DNA bank to locate relatives, the USA has done nothing.

I took a trip accross 1/2 the U.S. in 2010 and while white America has been looking at us, Asians and Muslims have taken over America.

I don’t know what language we will be speaking in 50 years but it will not be English. Go to any medial school around this country and see who is sitting in class…it is coming. Tina is very brave.

      January 26, 2013 at 8:13 pm

You stated: “If I had enough to live on wthout seeking employment I would move to Canada. ”

What you really mean is “If Canada’s welfare system was as good as the one here in the USA, I would have moved there a long time ago.”

You stated: “During slavery Canada refused to allow bounty hunters to come into their country to retrieve runaway slaves.”

You are kidding me? Right? You are still hung up on things that happened over 150 years ago? Based on that argument, you ought to move back to Africa, from which your ancestors were taken (against their will) over 150 years ago. Why are you still here in the USA? Move. Move now. Stop your whining, and MOVE. See how long you make it in Africa. Africa is a tough place. AIDS is rampant in the central and souther regiions; islamic terrorists control the norhtern 1/3 of the continent; rape is commonplace throughout the continent, drought and pestulance are the bain of the poor — no such thing as a food stamp there — they just starve to death after a few years. Tribal group A mass murders tribal group B (Rawanda). Yes, slavery was wrong, and likewise the slave trade. But stop and look at where you are today, vs where you could have been. Now, what in the h#!! are you griping about? And FYI, slavery is still alive and well in Africa. (Don’t you have any understanding of the world around you? You can’t trust ABC news to tell you all the news.) And while you are on your “blaime whitey for everything” trip, realize that a LOT of white men died in the war that led to the 13th Amendment. And I bet you are too dumb (like most black people) to know that the REPULICAN party was the anti-slavery party and the democrat party was the pro-slavery party. Yet, you spit on the Republicans who fought (and died) to win your freedom. Democrats invented Jim Crow laws. And proof that you and 98% of black people are dummasses is that you and 98% of black people vote for democrats, over and over again. See where it has got you? Dummass.

You stated: “Now they [Canada] have a government program which is aiding Africans to join a DNA bank to locate relatives, the USA has done nothing.

So what. You are a rich American, pony up the cash and pay for your own DNA test. Typical American black person — you want the government to do everything for you.

You stated: I took a trip accross 1/2 the U.S. in 2010 and while white America has been looking at us, Asians and Muslims have taken over America.

I agree there is a problem with immigration. Why did you leave off the Mexicans (the largest group of illegal immigrants)? And remember, most Asians and vitually all muslims vote for democrats.

You stated: “I don’t know what language we will be speaking in 50 years but it will not be English. Go to any medial school around this country and see who is sitting in class…it is coming.”

Not quite sure what your point is. The white male is being pushed out of medical schools, in favor or women and minority men. But they all still speak English.

You stated: “Tina is very brave.”

Well, OK. If you call it brave to shack up with a rich German dude, I guess she is brave. The reason she is renouncing her citizenship is related to Obama’s tax increase on the “rich.” Tina makes a lot of money off royaties and her celbrity status, so the tax increases (including California’s recent tax hike on the rich) takes quite a toll. Remember that golfer dude, Phil Mickeson saying that 63% of his winnings are taken away by taxes. I can understand why Tina would prefer the maximum federal income tax rate of 11.5% in Switzerland. That’s right, the “rich” people in Switzerland pay 11.5% income tax.

Love yourself first. Teach your children, and others to love themselves first. I’m in California where there is a mixture of Black and every kind of other; however, there seems to be more self hatred and superiority from these Blacks who chose other and the others created by these get togethers than any other place I know. These people spend more time differentiating themselves from a ” regular” Black person it’s ridiculous. When it comes to claiming scholarships or where being Black is a benefit, you do nit here the little percentage of Black being claimed.
Children like the difference in each other until an adult interferes and teaches them one or the other is better.
Tina Turner is a grown woman. She was born and grew up in America during a time when racism was at its peak. She has enough experience to know where she is most comfortable. Being in a place where a race of people are not exposed to Blacks” being inferior, less than or ugly”, can be quite inviting. On the contrary, if a Black” person does not have self esteem or self beauty and they travel to another place and calls that place home, sooner than later, that place will be just as contaminated as some of the folks in America feel about themselves, Blacks and others.
If Blacks do not protect their children’s thinking while they are young, they set them up for mental slavery caged in an inferiority complex based on race, and color. Teach the children” what someone thinks of them is none of their business and they are beautiful before anyone sees them- character is everything!

Are you that stupid? Tina Turner is renouncing citizentship because of taxes. She makes a pile of money each year, and as an American citizen, she is expected to pay a pile of taxes on that pile of money she makes each year. Now all you food-stampers be proud, Obama’s higher taxes has caused Tina Turner (a black person) to leave the country. Gotta love the irony there. The higher the taxes go, the more you will see those who are truly rich find another (lower-tax) place to live. You already have companies and high-earning individuals leaving California for other states. If you are a tycoon type, with earning of $1 million a year and live in California, you pay $100,000 in income tax just for California (plus even more to the US government). But if you live in Texas, or Tennesse, or Florida — you pay ZERO in state income taxes. A guy that makes $1 million a year can afford to move. If he can save $100,000 in taxes, then for sure he will move. Raising taxes on “rich” people is a self-defeating concept — you actually end up with less tax revenue in the government bank account when tax rates go up. Rich people are rich (duh) and therefore can find ways to avoid the taxes. Believe it or not, tax revenues actually went UP the year after the original Bush tax cuts kicked in.

Tina while living comfortably did n’t write any of her hits and that’s is where the money is in music. Publishing. She made a ton of money from touring that’s for sure.

She’s comfortable in Switzerland where her companion has been working for a number of years, so I would think it was for love and companionship rather than taxes. Switzerland also has a high tax rate as do most European countries with national health care.

Tina seems like a compassionate woman who would gladly pay her share to help her fellow human beings. She is a Buddhist after all.

No surprise here. She’s been living there for so long that America may seem like a foreign country to her now. If she’s happy, then all we can do is wish her the best. Josephine Baker did something similar years ago, and went over to France live. Back then, it was due to racism. Tina Turner has exercised her right as a human being to choose where she wants to be.

Whose business it is anyway. This is a silly question to ask us.The woman has made up her mind where she wants live, all we should be doing is wish he well. Her man lives there therfore that is where she belong. We American put too much emphasis on being American, we are people first, and nationality second.
If I had he money I would rather live in Switzerland for the tax benefits.
America is the most hated nation on earth, some justefied, some rediclious. From the aspect of making war, I understand. If I live somwher else and American bombs keep falling on me I would hate us too, When we look at our foreign policies as it relates to ther Palestanian, and Isreal, I would hate us too. Because it is plain BS, our poilcy as it relates to Isreal.

I see a lot of people saying that she could be a dual citizen, but depending on the country, you may have to give up your original citizenship. Not every country allows you to have dual citizenship, and maybe Switzerland is one of them, I don’t know. Either way, if that’s what she wants to do, then cool. I know someone who gave up his US citizenship for Panama and loves it, so if she’s happy with it, then so be it. Plus, she’s been there almost 20 years, so why not?

All of you who have been thinking about leaving are blowing smoke, nothing absolutely nothing is stopping you.

If you have wealth you can stay above the discourse, the racism! I chalange you to name the country where racism does not exist. Middle east, They will cut your black head off, Europe and you will again live in the hood! Asia, they will take your money and hate you, (remember the Olympic’s in China and the black’s couldn’t even get served. In Japan a prime minister said the problem with america is the blacks.

Go to Africa, if you don’t belong to the right tribe your butt is in trouble.

If you were more worldly, if you were more knowledgeable, if some of you were not so full of hate, you would understand you are already in the best place in the world for us.

I’m not saying you can’t go or shouldn’t go, I am saying their is a huge difference between a tourist and residing their for life.

I for one would never give up my U S citizenship! You can do what you want! Guess what you can’t do that any where else.

Example; in Singapore you can go to jail for 6 years for spitting! What language do you speak? A lot of you do not even speak your native language well, and have not even managed or understand your own culture, If you find a place that will take a flood of unproductive blacks let us all know.

Ever wonder why 1 million legal and 1.5 million Illegals come to the U S each and every year?

    Go ahead and leave!

Truthfully this is not our homeland at all… that’s why most African Americans are lost and don’t know their own (identity)… So lets get real here okay! Its time for us to wakeup and smell the real coffee, venturing out into other countries… but don’t just move to another country, research it and go visit to see if it will work for you, better yet ask God where to go and be open to where he guides you… Most of us have not because we ask not… well I’ve been asking for a while now and I know its getting ready to come to pass… I am leaving the USA and taking my seed with me. Having duel citizenship can be expensive if you are not living in the USA because you are still required to pay US taxes as well as the taxes of your newly adopted country. I have duel Canadian and American citizenship and should I choose to go back to Canada at any time(possibly soon to help care for an aging parent) I will be paying taxes in both countries. That’s the deal and that’s why so many people give up their American citizenship when moving elsewhere.

Your headline term “Denounce” is inflammatory. To “denounce” is to excoriate, put down with extreme prejudice and criticism. Nowhere in the story above, or in ANY of the other stories about Ms. Turner, or related to her decision to RELINQUISH (the word you SHOULD have used!!!) her American citizenship, is it made mention that she has “denounced” her US citizenship. Your headline sensationalizes the issue and as a long-time veteran professional in news media, I denounce your choice of words.

Quite frankly I don’t blame her, I have lived in other countries and if I had the chance I would move too. I have found that in other countries people judge you on your character and not the color of your skin. Tina was born in the South in the 40′s and 50′s some memories are difficult to forget, I say good luck to her. PS maybe you should do a story on Afro-American that have moved to Germany, after serving in the armed forces you’ll find more that just a few.

You can’t have dual citizenship if you were born in the USA. Only a few governments allow dual citizenships. You can have temporary visas while living in other countries. However, if you’re an American who wants citizenship in another country, you have to relinquish your American citizenship.

Tina Turner is a woman that has paid many different kinds of dues. her decision to change her citizenship from American to Swiss will not remove the facts. She is a Black woman that entertains and a descendant of a captured People that were never slaves. AS long as she knows this, she will be okay. BLACK, PROUD, FOREVER.

America has been both good and bad to Ms. Turner. At 73, she is a product of the old segregated South, and God knows what she went through growing up. A bad marriage to a violent man, her earnings stolen through the usual record industry musician slave system, she struggled as a solo artist for many years, and did not make that big solo comeback until she teamed up with a British producer for “Private Dancer”. So, she might be a bit bitter about America, and wants to be “European” at this point. Who is anybody to judge her, having not walked in shoes. Let her do whatever gives her happiness at age 73. I am actually in the process of moving to Paris. I have been there and all over Europe dozens of times. My wife grew up there, after being born in the former French colony of Senegal (West Africa). She came to the US on a college visa 15 years ago. Now, she has citizenship in all three countries! She taught me to speak French with some help from Rosetta Stone; we have as many friends in Paris as we do in the US. I am so tired of the bullshit here in the US…..too DAMN stressful. And yes it is true, France is virtually color blind. Blacks were treated MUCH better in 1920 in France than we are treated in the US TODAY! I will maintain my US Citizenship because of family; if I had no family here I would not return.

@Brotherscoe, I think Ike put her off black men. Not making excuses, just trying to understand

@Latrice,Ike is just one man,why the indictment against all bm is beyond understanding. When that sister shaved all of her black hair off and weaved some white peoples hair into her head years ago, I knew she had alot of self hatred in her then. She has always tried to run away from her blackness. She is a good singer, but suffers from mental hangups about herself.

Tina has denounced more than her citizenship. She did so years ago after she took up sleeping with this caucasian man. She affected this phony accent and when she was interviewed, she sounded like someone trying to speak as though they were blue blood intellects. She can live where she likes, noone cares. She just had better watch it though. If she becomes ill and requires care, that white man is going to throw her black behind in the nearest long term care facility, liquidate her assets before the relatives can come up with the money to get to Switzerland to try to see about her. She has children here in the states so she is already showing signs of compromised thinking. Just another black woman with self image problems; wanting to be white but since she isn’t,making decisions that will put and keep her in that world. She will surely pay the price for her mental unbalance.

NOw if Tina had been a blackman, that renounced all black women and had a fine longtime German executive white girl friend, citizenship in a whte homeland, some of you sisters would be putting that brother down. Why the double standard when it comes to doing what you want and being with whom you want to be with? Just saying…

Because most Black men who date outside their race demean and put down black women as their number one excuse to date white women!! I’ve always believed that you are entitled to date who ever you want but if you have to demean a group of people to do so then something is terribly wrong!!

You mean to tell me bw don’t demean their bm when they date wm? what makes the bw have such a higher motive then bm when it comes to dating or marrying whites? Sounds just like some whites, when they justify their behavior against blacks in this country.BW/WM are the biggest complainers of BM/WW dating each other.Sister you can’t have your cake and ice cream to, brothers are liberated from that Jim Crow just like you are.

I have considered becoming an expat. More now than ever before because there are too many fire arms in the hands of citizens. The fire power out numbers law enforcement in certain pockets of These United States. No where else on this planet is this considered normal. But it costs money to live anywhere in this world, and I lack. If I were rich, it would be a no brain-er.

I agree,I’d love to get the hell out of here too. Just don’t think I’d go there, for a myriad of reasons. I’d prefer somewhere predominantly black but to each his/her own.

Somewhere predominantly black is usuually 3rd world countries, and for a black women that spells rape from roving military bnads or gangs of BMlooking to take.
