No one is profiling young white men for having a propensity toward violence, and when writer David Sirota wondered aloud, on MSNBC’s Up With Chris Hayes, why this wasn’t happening, he was met with an onslaught of blather from the right wing. Here’s what Sirota actually said:
I said that because most of the mass shootings in America come at the hands of white men, there would likely be political opposition to initiatives that propose to use those facts to profile the demographic group to which these killers belong. I suggested that’s the case because as opposed to people of color or, say, Muslims, white men as a subgroup are in such a privileged position in our society that they are the one group that our political system avoids demographically profiling or analytically aggregating in any real way.
Like it or not, Sirota may be onto something, and recent random killings, from the Aurora, Colorado to Sandy Hook, Connecticut, seem to indicate that the main group predisposed toward random violence is white males.
And if that weren’t enough, Anonymous has released video of a group of males (three white, one non-white) making fun of a girl being r*ped, even going so far as to say how the girl was “deader than” Trayvon Martin, adding, “she is so r*ped her p**s is about as dry as the sun right now.” These are high school aged boys who are, simultaneously, making fun of r*pe and the killing of a black teen.
Also, keep in mind how much these teens enjoyed mocking Trayvon Martin’s death after the fact, even coming up with something called “Trayvoning”, where they would play dead while holding Skittles and Iced Tea:
Are black teens killing each other in Chicago? Yes. But gang violence is not equivalent to random violence. It doesn’t indicate blood thirst, or even psychopathology. But does making fun of the dead or hurt indicates something craven is amiss in the mind of that person? We should get to the bottom of what that thing is, that thing which makes death of brown people hilarious, and r*ping a woman a thing which elicits uproarious laughter.
