High School Students Wear Klan Hoods to a Hockey Game

Three high school students in a North Dakota school put on Ku Klux Klan-style white robes and hoods during a Friday night state hockey game.  The move has sparked outrage nation-wide, and some are wondering what the teens were thinking.

Shane Schuster who was seated with friends saw the hooded students across the rink at Ralph Engelstad Arena. He said, “I thought, ‘Are those KKK hoods?’ I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked.”

He took a photo and uploaded it later on Twitter.

Red River High School principal, Kristopher Arason, said that just after Red River’s first goal the students put on the gear. He said they wore it for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and they removed the offensive items after complaints by fellow students.  At least they got the message pretty quick.

“We, as a school, are extremely disappointed with the behavior of these three students,” Arason said in a statement. “This behavior is not a representation of our school or student body.”

Arason said that “appropriate action is being taken,” after contacting the students and their parents. But he would not disclose what type of action is to be taken.

Red River apparently has a tradition of wearing a different color for each of the three days of the state tournament in accordance with the team’s colors. Roughrider fans wore black for the first day, white for the second and red for the final day.

Many users of Twitter have expressed their outrage to the photo posted by Shuster and by Saturday afternoon it had been re-tweeted 75 times.

Davies High School is named in honor of Ronald Davies, the former federal judge from Fargo whose 1957 rulings integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. — a pivotal event in the civil rights movement.

The Winnipeg Jets, currently the Phoenix Coyotes, started the tradition of fans wearing all white more than 25 years ago.

The practice has since spread to the college and high school levels.  Maybe white isn’t the best color for anyone, or at least it doesn’t go with a hood.

There really is no exxageration Marcel. Because of the hatred and violence the kkk represents, why couldn’t a black , Jewish, or gay person stood their ground?? Only the threat is necessary.
