There are some who wonder if the LAPD even wanted fugitive ex-police officer Christopher Dorner to make it out of the woods alive. But that is all going to be subject to speculation, now that it’s been reported that Dorner has died. Dorner’s body was found inside a cabin that had been set on fire.
Police threw tear gas into the house and are still saying that the body has not yet been officially identified. The official process can take hours or even days. Police say that as they moved toward the cabin, they heard a single gunshot, so there is speculation that Dorner may have decided to kill himself.
Police told Dorner to surrender on a loudspeaker, and when they got no response, they decided to tear down the walls of the cabin and enter with tear gas. They also say that after they heard the gunshot, fire spread throughout the cabin.
Dorner’s death came after a killing spree that left four dead, including two police officers. Dorner wrote a manifesto claiming that he committed the killings in response to disparate treatment and corruption he witnessed within the Los Angeles Police Department. Dorner allegedly broke into a home, tied up a couple and stole their pickup truck.
Dorner was spotted later in the truck by a local officer, and a firefight ensued. Dorner was then able to get away and hide in a cabin nearby. One deputy was hit when Dorner fired a shot out of the cabin an another was injured when Dorner came out the back of the cabin and used a smoke bomb to try to get away. But instead of getting away, he was forced back inside the cabin.
Police pursued over 1,000 tips they received about Dorner’s whereabouts before finding him in the cabin. There were rumors that he’d escaped to Mexico. Over 200 officers went through Big Bear Mountain looking for Dorner, searching the mountain cabin-by-cabin.
Dorner had threatened “unconventional and asymmetrical warfare” against the police if they decided to retaliate against him.
