It seems that arguing that we are all a part of the same community is reason enough to get the hair up on the back of the necks of some conservatives. MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry found this out the hard way when she was attacked for her MSNBC commercial.
In a new “Lean Forward” ad, Perry makes the case that the U.S. should invest in more money in children because children are not just a part of a household, they’re part of a community.
“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we’ve always had kind of a private notion of children … We haven’t had a very collective notion of ‘these are our children,’” she says in the ad. “So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that ‘kids belong to their parents,’ or ‘kids belong to their families,’ and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.”
Harris-Perry is clearly arguing that countries should make investments in children because children impact the overall community, not just their nuclear family. If your child doesn’t know how to read and can’t get a job, that impacts the unemployment rate and so on.
But of course, that notion was lost on conservatives like Sarah Palin, who took to Twitter to criticize Harris-Perry: “Apparently MSNBC doesn’t think your children belong to you. Unflippingbelievable.”
And Palin wasn’t the only hyperbolic conservative to go after Harris-Perry, since Rush Limbaugh said Harris-Perry’s comments were “as old as communist g******e.”
